Art, architecture, sightseeing and parks screams Rome to me. If you haven't been you should go it's magnificent and will be lovely in the fall but not too cold. There are some wonderful private collections like Palazzo Comonna as well as fantastic churches, the Vatican museums and the national galleries.
WE spent a month there in December 2013 and I have a number of posts on my blog that may be interesting.

I agree that Madrid has excellent museums and you could do a number of day trips but personally I would favor Rome at that time of year.

I would suggest London.
It not only holds one of the worlds great castles, the Tower of London, but numerous others are within reach by an easy day trip.
The National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery have many examples of superb renaissance painting, There are other collections as well, such as Hampton Court Palace.
Parks -- Regents and Hyde Parks are world famous. I'm also fond of Green Park for the astonishing waterfowl found there.
