Looking for an area of England

I am working on my genealogy & have learned that one of my family lines came from a place that is described in an old book, written in early 1900s, as "close to the area of the Golden Ball in England." I have found several places that vaguely fit that description but was hoping that some of you "seasoned travelers" or maybe Brits could help me out on this. I want to schedule a trip over there to visit this place - if & when I find it. Many thanks from TX!

Hi

unless you've got a bit more to go on, you could have a very long, but enjoyable search.

The Golden Ball is a very common British pub name.

Hi,

There is some discussion of this at http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read...-11/1068686410. My apologies if those responses are to your own question!

There a few pubs scattered around England called the Golden Ball. Is it possible that the reference is to a pub?

What are the surrounding sentences to the piece you have quoted? I assume they don't give any further clues?

A quick search on www.gazetteer.co.uk produces somewhere called Golden Balls in south Oxfordshire, at OS map reference SU5597 (UK readers are permitted a wry smile at this point - will you write to Private Eye or shall I?).

The Oxfordshire pages at www.genuki.org.uk don't list this place, but they don't claim to be exhaustive. Multimap doesn't recognise it either, so it's presumably a very small place - maybe just a pub by a crossroads or something.

Someone with access to a fairly large-scale Ordnance Survey map could probably find it from the reference.

Does that tie up with any other information you might have?

Nice work Patrick.

Now, click on http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.c...&down.y=11

It is, as you suggest, a crossroads a few hundred yards south of Nuneham Courtnay.

However, personally I doubt anyone born there would call it "the area of the Golden Ball", when there are far more communicative ways of describing it.

Dianee: you'd get a lot more help if you described the contet of the quotation.

This looks like the only possible place in England, in which case, local Family History Society might be able to advise dianee in more detail:

Was that book written by someone in the States? Very likely - if so they probably were writing from old memories or from recollections of 1st or 2nd generation emmigrants. Is there ANYTHING else that gives a hint of where they are talking about? Name of a county house, parish, church, etc. . . . . . .

How about Golden Ball Hill, site of some ancient dwellings south-west of Marlborough? OS coordinates SU129640 if you want to check on multimap or one of the other UK map sites.
