We have just returned from Croatia and stayed two nights in Plitvice. We had originally booked at Hotel Grabovac (e-mail: [email protected]) just a few kilometers from the park toward Zagreb, but when we arrived they didn't have water due to construction in the area. The room we were to have was clean and neat -- typical motel decor and fairly roomy, priced I think at about equivalent $60 per night. However, we couldn't take a chance on the water situation so drove down the road toward the park and noticed several newly built homes advertising sobes and apartments. We picked one we liked and got a very nicely furnished room with refrigerator and a lovely tiled bath (shower). In addition we had heat that we could adjust ourselves! The cost was 105 kunas (about $15) p.p.p.night, including tax (no breakfast). They have more than one room/apartment to rent, so 2 couples might be accommodated. The owners were gracious and spoke some English. They had been refugees during the war and returned a few years ago to rebuild. The name on the sign outside is Vladimir Vukovic and it is a 3* home, meaning it offers ensuite showers. There are several similar looking homes along the Zagreb road near the park. We saved a lot by staying in a sobe and enjoyed meeting the family. There is also a booking office within the park and they can find you a room. In addition, there are 2 or 3 hotels within the park but they looked overrun with tour groups. We loved the park even though it was cold and drizzly the day we went. We ate at Restaurant Licka Kuka, across from park entrance #1 -- very good. If you like dark beer, try the local dark beer which is quite like Guinness. Enjoy your trip!
