Looking for a nice beach in Italy
 

I'm planning a trip in May 2010 to Rome and Naples then finishing off the trip on Corsica to visit family. I would like to find a nice quite beach to spend a few relaxing day somewhere around Rome or Naples. Does anyone have a suggestion? What about Capri?

The sea is pretty cold for swimming in May. If you just want to relax and get some sun, there is Sperlonga which is between Rome and Naples. The beaches on the Amalfi Coast and Capri are small and pebbly.

Capri does not really have nice beaches - there are several beach clubs at the water's edge but its rocky. That being said - Capri is wonderful - lovely scenery and walks. We have stayed at Hotel Mamela which has a nice pool so we usually walk and explore in the morning and then hang out at the pool in the afternoon. Hopefully another poster will give you a beach suggestion - I have read some articles on Viareggio but have not been there myself.

Viareggio is not near Naples or Rome.

Non-Italians often find the Mediterranean waters warm enough in May. Most Capri accommodations have pools and plenty of warm sun in May.

You might consider the island of Ischia, which has thermal springs and far fewer day tripping tourists. All of the Amalfi coast is a prime tourist destination, famous for its beauty. If you are looking to get away from throngs, the towns a bit south of Amalfi, up until Salerno, are a bit less in demand. You might find it simple to take the train from Napoli to Salerno and then come up the coast a bit by bus, but not going as far as Amalfi.

I'd spend the beach time on Corsica. Lots of sandy beaches.

Just don't tell your family you're there.
