Looking for a music store in London
I'm looking for a store that would have used or out of print cd's or only U.K. releases. Virgin Megastore or Tower Records isn't what I have in mind.
We're looking for David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Def Leppard, etc. English artists that released music we can't get in the U.S.
Does anyone have a particular store that they can recommend in London. Or perhaps Sheffield or York as we will be travelling there as well? Thanks.

You could try Reckless Records in Upper St. N1, or another music store (whose name I forget) in Exmouth Market EC1. Also, just walking around Soho/Cov. Gdn. you'll happen upon plenty of record stores.

But Best of all is Beano's in Croydon in South London - this will involve a rail trip from (I think) Waterloo or maybe Clapham Junction (check a railway website, sorry I can't be more specific).
Beanos is the largest 2nd hand record store in Europe - spread over three floors of an old Victorian Warehouse it is a treasure trove of rare and collectible vinyl and CDs - I make an annual pilgrimage there from over a hundred miles away (I know 100 miles is no distance to an American but in the UK that realy impresses people!).
The other great second hand place (and I second MK2's recommendation for Reckless in Islington - they've also a branch in Soho, Brewer Street from memory)is The Record and Tape Exchange at Nottinghill. Get out on the north side of Nottinghill Gate and walk back towards Bayswater - you'll pass several seperate units - one specialises in HI Fi equipment, one in singles, one in soundtracks and another in CDs. Upstairs in the CD shop (and you have to check your bags in to get up there!) there is a wealth of extraordinary vinyl both 45s and LPs. I can't pass without popping in and coming out a deal poorer - but happy!
Hope this helps & happy hunting!

Oops... just read the end of your post... when in York head to Tracks. Can't give you the address but ask in Virgin or any record shop and they'll direct you... they may even have a presence on the web.
If you can lay your hands on a copy of Mojo easily over there (and it should be in Borders and Barnes & Noble) check out the classified ads at the rear - there are loads of ads from specialist music places the length and breadth of GB and your sure to find something to pique your interest.

Thanks so much! I will print this out.
And you're right Dr_Do good I don't mind going 100 miles for music. Besides, I have a Britrail pass so that's fine. Thank you m_kingdom, you're suggestions are always right on. Scarlett- I've been to Covent Garden 3x's and have never seen a record store, I will definitely ask. Thanks to all.
