Looking for a great place to hunker down for two weeks-
Our family is looking for a place to stay in Germany for two weeks. We want to be near (but not in) Munich - preferably somewhere south and east of the city. This would allow us to visit neighboring countries on day trips. We need a fairly large place with at least three beds. I have looked on the following sites suggested by posters to an earlier thread:
Gemut.com htt://www.vacation-apartments.com/ vacationhomes.com but no luck so far. Does anyone have any other suggestions? |
A couple of years ago I rented a vacation rental apartment (Ferienwohnung in German) in Garmisch-Partenkirchen for a month, in the German Alps S of Munich. These type of accomodations are very common in vacation areas such as ski towns and are a good deal off season. The one I rented was nothing fancy, but perfect as a home base for side trips.
I would try a general web search under "ferienwohnung" plus a specific town or area. Of course this will search the web and call up web sites in German, but many web sites will have an English version as well for US or UK visitors. If your goal is to stay in Southern Bavaria, Salzurg, Tirol areas, then Garmish is not a bad location with plenty of apartments. If you want to exlore further, or be closer to Munich, then there may be better locations. If you want a town with some nightlife, tourist sights (besides beautiful mountains), then Garmish might not be your style. Many towns also have their own web site with links to lodging, apartments, etc. There are numerous threads on the forum about Bavaria, Neuschwanstein, etc. Good luck! |
I'd second the idea of Garmisch. We originally planned to go there for a few days, but found such a great deal on an apartment, decided to stay for a week. We could have stayed longer.
We rented our apartment through drawbridge to Europe. It worked out great. |

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, because I have recommended the place so many times, I would suggest you take a close look at Prien at the Chiemsee (Chiemsee Lake) It is about a 56 minutes train ride to Munich, about the same distance to Salzburg. It offers boat trips to King Ludwig II's (of Neuschwanstein fame) palace on the Herreninsel (island0 in the lake. If you have a car, you can take scenic day trips to Berchtesgaden, Zell am See, etc.
The town has a website; it offers many Farienwohnungen ( vacation apartments). |
