Another recommendation would be Lower Slaughter in the Cotswolds. I have not stayed here, but as a Von Essen hotel, it was highly regarded. It too has recently changed hands, and you may wish to check recent reports..

It has been a few years but my husband and I had a great stay at Le Manoir Aux Quat Saisons near Oxford. You can take the train to Oxford and then a taxi to the Inn. Thank you all for your wonderful suggestions -- so hard to choose! I am in love with Limewood, but due to the proximity to London, ease of making a daytrip to Cardiff, and convenience to Heathrow on our way home Sunday morning, we are going to stay at Cliveden. They welcome a 13-year old to most places (no fun if she feels excluded) and are very accomodating to work with. I'll submit a trip report when we return: Oxford, London (still looking for hotels -- see new thread if you have ideas!), Cardiff and Cliveden. Thank you all!
