Looking for a cafe in Tours, France
 

Looking for a comfortable place to take a lunch break alone near the center of Tours. Less expensive would be nice. I will be working and will need a comfortable place to just decompress for an hour everyday and there are so many places to choose from....difficult to know where to go.

Unfortunately, putting "Tours" in the search function brings up...well...lots of tours!

I know very well this place !! I suggest to go to Vieux Tour quarter. At this place, there's a square named Place Plummereau. It's a highlight of the city. Many bars, restaurants, fast food. Tonight, there's a lot of people.

You could also go to Jean Jaures square but it's a bit more expensive.

I have a very fond memory of a place I ate with my friend Ellen in the center of Tours in 1972. The tournedos was delicious and the cheese plate was wonderful. There was a cockroach walking up the wall next to my right ear. But I would go back if I could.

Tours is such a funky weird kinda town. First time round we hung out at the fountains opposite the station waiting for our bus to Azay. Second trip to Tours we fed a dog which belonged to some hippies hanging out at the same fountain. Poor thing seemed starved. We ended up walking to the 'Old' part of tours for a beer and eventually just eeny-meeny-miny-mo'ed a place to eat. Nothing special - just food.
We did notice MacDonalds were totally swamped all the time!

No question that the place you seek is Place Plumereau. Many years ago the Universe just across from the Hotel de Ville was filled with people but now it is Vieux Tours.

There is a great street in Tours filled with restaurants. It isn't as pucturesque as Place Plumereau, but it is definitely on the less expensive end of the market.

Rue Colbert is full of restaurants, all serving menus in the 11 - 15 euro price range. http://tinyurl.com/ruecolbert We don't bother really making a choice - we just go into whatever takes our fancy on the day. (this doesn't help you really, I know, but in our experience they're all safe, so just chose on whatever you feel like eating on the day)
