Looking for a Beach near Marseille Airport
 

We're flying into Marseille and want to immediately go to a decent swimming beach for a few days. We prefer not to travel far. Are city beaches in Marseille safe and O.K for swimming? Has anyone been to beaches in the eastern Camarague? Ideally we would like a beach tranquil beach in close proximity to hotels and restaurants.

I've been to beaches in the Camargue (Saint-Maries-de-la-Mer and Plage de Piémanson) and they are lovely, sandy and huge beaches. I've also been to the beaches in Carqueiranne, which are sandy and nice but not large like the Camargue

The nearest beaches to MRS airport are W of the airport, along the Cote Bleue. Travel time would be 30 minutes or so.

This area includes some very rocky calanques at its eastern end but progressively flattens out toward its western extremity. In some of these calanques are fishing villages in which are also a number of holiday cottages.

A small railway connects the villages to each other and to Marseille. Its tunnels and trestle-bridges are spectacular.

Further to the west, the area becomes more residential and then finally the settlements more or less peter out.

The area is almost completely unknown to N Americans. I enjoy it very much but it may be an acquired taste.

Thanks to everyone who answered. Your information was very helpful, with beaches not mentioned in the guidebooks I've consulted--which might be why some of these beaches are nearly unknown to Americans.
