If you are into festivals you may want to consider the so special carnival in Basel (beginning Monday Feb 18, 4 a.m.) Book your accommodation immediately if you decide to go.

1. Paris
2. Madrid
3. Amsterdam

Paris definitely has the jazz scene, the museums, the food, etc. etc. We've been twice in February and twice in December. We've also been in Spring and Fall. Anytime in Paris is great. Consider an apartment. We have rented them for trips that ranged from 3 nights to 8 nights. It's nice to have more space, a kitchen, and to just generally make yourself believe you live there.

Madrid is a very late night city. We've only been once in November and it was fairly mild. I can't say what it would be like in February. The food is great and the museums are plentiful. The people were also quite friendly and we enjoyed live music while there.

Amsterdam is fun, but when we went for one night as a side trip from Paris, it was February and very cold. We still managed to do a boat tour of the canals and walk around and do some museums. We ate Turkish food while there for dinner so can't say I would go there for the food.

Small trips are some of the best trips in my opinion. Have a great time wherever you choose to go.

Sounds like fun! I'd vote for Paris, too, especially since neither of you have been there before. We often travel in the winter and enjoy it quite a bit.

Does your beau have a passport yet? How will you convince him to get one before you go?

NanBug, fortunately he already has a passport so I don't have to worry about that. And I did already sneak a peak at it and copy down all of the relevant info I'd need to book our flights.

I'll probably tell him the week before what weather he should pack for by being as vague as possible. I've been toying with some kind of reveal by triviaa few days before, starting very broadly with answers that could apply to multiple places and then narrow in, i.e. "your destination's flag shares colors with the US flag". I've got awhile to play with this though.

Would love any creative ideas on how to up the surprise quotient. So excited for this trip and his reaction to the whole thing! Thanks everyone for guiding me in the right direction.

I would vote Paris first, Rome or Venice (maybe both regarding the latter if you have at least six nights available) second choice. I just checked the dates of the famous Carnival of Venice for 2013, carnival falls between the 2nd and 12th of February, too early considering your holiday dates.

That's good about the passport, smosweet. Can't wait to hear how you pull this one off. I love surprising other people, but I hate to be surprised! I'm sure he'll be in shock. You're quite a nice girlfriend!
