Long weekend in Rome
My wife and I are heading to Rome for a long weekend in mid February or early March to visit Museums and Roman artifacts.
Can you recommend a hotel or pensione for two mature adults that would be central to the typical "must see sights".
Thank you,
NC
There are certainly many.

A hint as to budget would allow us be more helpful.

In the meantime you'll find a number of hotels at http://twenj.com/romehotel.htm

www.twenj.com
Rome . Switzerland . Bavaria

Our favorite, the La Residenza, runs pretty close to that and you may be able to get a 'weekend special'.

The Genio or Santa Chiara might also be good to look at.
Dear Nick:

If you can spend 5 nights-say Thurs-Monday, Italiatours (Alitalia)has a fabulous winter air/hotel package to Rome (which I'm actually using over Presidents Weekend). For $850/person, I'm flying Alitalia direct NY-Rome at the time of my choosing and staying at the 4-star Colonna Palace hotel right in the heart of Rome between the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon, with buffet breakfast included. Transfers to and from the Rome airport are also included. The website is www.italiatours.com. They offer many other hotels in all price ranges and all in and around central Rome, but the Colonna Palace is the only one that IMO is really in the heart of things. Buon viaggio.

I think the nicest little hotel is the Hotel Due Torri. The staff is very friendly, the rooms are atmospheric with modern baths and they offer a simple but nice breakfast. The location is very central, near the Piazza Navona, Corso and Spanish Steps.

Check out the picture on the "hotelbook"websight;

http://www.hotelbook.com/static/welcome_14282.html

I recommend sending a fax to the hotel direct for the best rates.

Nicholas As a regular vistior to Rome I have found that all in packages with airfares etc work out better with cheaper =hotel deals than flying in and booking hotels separate. In March I and my husband paid twice as much for a 2 Star hotel than we did in November for a 4 star. Check out past hosted forums for one on Rome. Enjoy yourself and if you are visiting St. Peters take the free tours at 2.15 or 3.00 as opposed to paying for a tour. Another good tour agency to use is enjoy Rome - they do excellent and very cheap (in comparsion to others) walking tours. We found that our trip in March was a great time to go - the weater was reasonable and all of the musuems were operating on summer opening times but there were not a lot of tourists - this year might be different because of the 2000 celebrations - avoid Easter time and enjoy yourselves,

Cathy
