Long weekend in December
My wife turns 30 in December and after a fairly stressful year for one reason or another I want to take her away for her birthday (Granny and Granda will babysit!)

I want to go to somewhere a bit different and where we've never been. To give you some ideas of where not to go, we live in London and are from Scotland originally, and in recent years have been to Paris, Brussels, Bruges, Barcelona and the South of France.

I was thinking about somewhere like Prague, Budapest, or Rome, or even Tallin, Moscow and (maybe) New York (I know this isn't the US forum!) It needs to be somewhere interesting, with plenty of opportunity just to wander round - I don't need to go round museums or art galleries. Germany and Austria are also possibilities!

I know there's a lot to go on, but I'm a bit spoilt for choice! Especially for those in the US, where would you make the special trip to?

I would recommend Moscow if it wouldn't be in December. For that season Lisbon would be perfect. IMO, East European capitals are best in spring (April-begin June).
|
Four places I would enjoy for a long winter weekend are St Petersburg (much more beautiful than Moscow), the Channel Islands, Salzburg or Prague.
|
I would absolutely vote for Rome! Tons to do and see! And a great nightlife for celebrating that special b-day!

Keith,
My (biased) $0.02 is NYC...
On this side of the pond, Virgin and BA both run pretty decent prices on a flyer package to London so I imagine they do the same to NYC. Usually, you have to travel before Dec. 20th.

If you are leaning towards staying in Europe, my other $0.02 is Munich.
From London a weekend in Moscow or Petersburg is ideal. Remember their visa requirements, but it is not that bad a flight (direct to both Moscow and St Petersburg).

In late December in St Petersburg there is the Arts Square Festival, and this year it promises to be a wonderful event.

Also, NYC is great for a weekend from London, although hotel rates are often high in December (though many offer weekend discounts).

Depends on what you are looking for. I LOVE Budapest, but in December it can be bloody cold and foggy. If "relax" is the operative word what about some of those wonderful islands that are easier for you to reachthan us. Or, even -- come to the Carribean:)
