Long term car rental in United Kingdom?
I will be volunteering in Hampshire mid June through mid September this year. Anyone had experience with renting a car for a couple months? I'll be volunteering in the countryside and have been advised to have a car.
Thanks!! |
Regular rentals are almost always limited to 30 days (often under 30 days - meaning exactly 29 days IRL). But several agencies do offer short term leases - Europcar, Avis, etc. Their websites should have all the info. Haven't checked Autoeurope to see if they include lease options but I seem to recall they used to
Where in Hampshire will you be? |
Long term, I'd see if you can pick up a Renault lease car, you may have to pop over to France to pick it up. https://www.renault-eurodrive.com/en

I had thought about that but wouldn't one end up with a left hand drive car? Not easy to adjust to driving on the 'wrong side of the road' while sitting on the wrong side of the car ;) |
When my NZ sister does it she gets a RHS driver position car, Renault makes them and they lease them. Obv. if you don't order it then you don't get it.

Several car rental agencies offer long term car rental, that is what you need to search for.

I have no problem driving on the left hand side from the left hand side :) I was in Australia for 4 months and got used to it!

"Australians drive on the left side of the road and the majority of vehicles have the steering wheel on their right side." |

I have driven a left hand drive car in the UK -- (for about 6 weeks before we bought our first RHD car) . . . it is definitely possible but there is a WHOLE lotta difference between driving the wide open spaces in California or OZ and the narrow/winding/hedgerow lined country roads in the UK. Constantly not being able to see around the next bend can be very stressful. |
Drove my left hand drive Mazda RX7 in the UK for two years. Lived in London and drove it to Oxford, the Cotswolds, Kent, Wales, Devon and Cornwall (that last a bit much!). But when I rented a right hand drive car -- I needed more than two seats -- I found it easier. On St John and the other US Virgin Islands they drive on the left with left hand drive cars -- I readjusted easily.
