I traveled to London with both my kids ages 20 and 6. Flew from JFK and arrived at Heathtrow at 9am. Took the tube to the Southwark Station which is near the location of our flat. Checked in and took off by foot. The only times we took the tube was to St. Pancras train Station and RT to airport. All attractions are within walking distance and if you are in good shape you can walk and experience the city as we did.

Thames River cruise to Greenwich
National Maritime Museum
Thames River cruise back to Westminster Pier

What I loved the most about London is not only the main attractions as Big Ben and Tower Bridge but the fact that all Museums are free, I can't imagine trying to visit all the places we visited and having to pay for that. I did cooperate with the donations but that is not even a fraction of what the visit is worth. Also, people are very friendly and helpful, I asked for information and directions to ramdom people while we were walking and received not just the info I needed but full attention with details. We encounter awesome weather, two days were at 70F and only had a little bit of rain one afternoon. What I didnt like was the food, we were not lucky since we ended up eating out where we were at the time we got hungry, so we didnt research much and ended up eating so so food. You make some good points OP - whilst accomodation in London is expensive, people sometimes forget that there are a significant number of free attractions - and not just obscure galleries - world class museums that would be top of most peoples 'must see' lists anyway. This can help make London very competitive with places where lodgings are cheaper.

Re meals, there has been a food revolution here over the last couple of decades and you can eat really well, affordeably and easily now - from sandwich chains like PRET, and gourmet street food trucks, through gastro pubs and Michelin starred restaurants. I would recommend Time Out for eating out guides.

@ bilboburgler, we were lucky I know for the type of weather we encounter, lucky indeed!
@ PM67, I promise my next time in London will be just to go out and eat, so I will do a better research for best eateries in town using "timeout"...
