London: where to buy Cheddar
 

I'd like to stock up on Cheddar and other cheese while in London. Last time I bought some wonderful cheeses at Harrods' but it was quite expensive.

Do you know of any nice cheese shops in Central London?

If you are in London on a Friday, try Borough Market..wonderful cheese merchants come in from the countryside

Paxton & Whitfield (or something like that) on Jermyn Street, or Neals Dairy Yard near Covent Gardent

Sainsbury, Asda, Morrisons, Waitrose, Somerfield, Tesco.

I would go to Neal's Yard Dairy (and frequent do - I was in there at lunchtime today).

I second Borough Mkt and Neal's Yard. Borough Market is just a gret place to spend an hour or two.

Just last Friday I bought some lovely Neal's Yard Dairy Lancashire Poacher and Sage Derby -- at my local Whole Foods in <u>No. California</u>. Whenever I'm suffering England/London withdrawal - some good cheeses, Branston Pickle, and beer puts things right . . . .

A memory from four years ago. Dor and I are trying to choose which cheeses to buy in a small village in I believe Lincolnshire county.
A young couple ahead of us ask for the 'Canadian Cheddar'.
I have to ask, ( no one has ever accused me of being shy), why the 'Canadian Chedar'?
'Because it is far better' is the reply.

Borough Market is open Fridays and Saturdays in the mornings and tends to wind down by about 3pm. Saturday can be extremely busy, so Friday late morning would be the perfect time if you could manage it. There's an outpost of Neal's Yard Dairy on Park Street, just two steps away from the market, and the wonderful Monmouth Coffee Shop just opposite.

Best time to go to Borough Market is either 11am or after 2pm on Friday. Skip the lunch crowds if possible!! I'd go at 11am as everything is opening adn the crowds aren't too bad. You can make a full cirlcle of te entire market. Then choose your lunch and then buy your goodies

If you are buying cheese to bring to the US, don't bother. You cannot bring it into the country. Enjoy eating it in London!

Depending on where you're staying - keep a look out for the local Farmer's market. That will have lots of lovely cheeses.

In fact a decent supermarket will have a good range (look out for Waitrose in particular)

There's not an enormous amount of point in searching beyond Waitrose, though Paxton's, Neals Yard and La Fromagerie (www.lafromagerie.co.uk) have an atmosphere many might enjoy.

As Audere says, you can usually rely on the cheese stalls at the farmers' markets listed at www.lfm.org.uk.

These are not the same as the more traditional street markets all over London, whose few cheese stalls typically sell out and out crap.

I seem to remember a particularly well stocked cheese shop being featured in an episode of Monty Python. Does anyone know where that is?

On Saturday, the Borough Market opens at 9:00 am. We went and ate our breakfast there as well as purchasing food for a picnic lunch which we ate after walking along the Thames South Bank and visiting the Tate Modern.

Opening hours are Fridays 12:00noon - 6:00pm. Saturdays 9:00am to 4:00pm.

The cheese shop you're thinking of is The Old Cheese Emporium - Henry Wensleydale, purveyor of fine cheese to the gentry and the poverty stricken too. And it's licensed for public dancing!

Most of the supermarkets will allow you to taste before you buy. Not sure you can do that at the market. Don't forget you'll need some biscuits/bread and butter to go with it. and what about some wine/cider to wash it all down? don't forget the corkscrew!
