There are so many old pubs in London, but our daughter directed us to Ye Old Cheshire Cheese,
145 Fleet Street, London. This place has a LOT of history and is a very quaint old crooked building.
Also these, which I haven't been to:
White Horse, Parsons Green
The Anchor, near the Globe Theater
Museum Tavern across the street from the British Museum
The George Inn, not far from the London Bridge
If you go to Greenwich, there is also the Cutty Sark, which is meant to be a good pub

If you google “London’s best pubs” you will come up with a myriad of suggestions, including location, menus, hours, and particular charms. Check out London Times, March 26, 2009 for the “Top Ten.” Two that I hope to sample when I go to London in July are the Seven Stars in the City and the Greenwich Union when I take the Thames cruise to Greenwich. I know it will be tacky, but I expect to drop into the Sherlock Holmes Pub near Trafalgar Square. (Visited the Sherlock Holmes Museum last summer – definitely tacky but I just love the stories!) I also plan to check out the Audley Pub in Mayfair, a brisk walk from the Apsley House Wellington Museum at Hyde Park Corner which I intend to visit. So many to choose from….

There are hundreds, if not thousands, of pubs that different people favour for different reasons. The trouble with identifying a "top five" is that everyone would go there and make the experience unbearable. Browse to your heart's content at

and see if you can find one that's your special discovery (preferably within staggering difference of where you would be going anyway).

O f the prettiest is the Salisbury on St Martin's Lane. The George should be at the top of the list . Everyone has a favorite. Too bad or resident Pub critic no longer posts on Fodor's < CW
My favorite is the Anglesea Arms on Onslow Gardens, it's my local when I'm in London

The Dove at Hammersmith. Dates to the 17th century, right on the river

As Patrick says there are literally hundreds of great pubs (and several thousand pubs in total). Almost none are worth a significant detour across town since there is bound to be a good to great pub w/i walking distance of wherever you happen to be.
I have several all-time favorites -- maybe 10+ - but never go out of my way to visit one of them since I discover a new 'favorite' almost every trip.
So just checkout pubs as you wander around -- you find good ones . . .

Coming at this from another angle...I took the London Walks Hampstead Heath Pub Walk. Apart from a bit of history between stops, they visit 3 different pubs (The Holly Bush, Ye Olde White Bear and a gastro pub).
