London walks: explorer days
 

Hello all
I need some advice re which explorer day to choose for my week at the end of this April. I am a single female in my thirties. I have been to London before a few times, never been outside of London though. I am a mom of two who finally ahs a week for herself. Initially I wanted to get a feel for the English countryside but I am open for suggetions. The options from london walks is Cambridge, Kent, Stonehenge, Bath, Canterburry, and many more. Have you narrowed down the list based on what dates they'll be doing the walks while you're there? When I was researching these I found out that the trips to some cities aren't all that frequent - for example, the only April date for the Bath trip is April 4. I would take a careful look at the dates first.

I checked the schedule and the only trips that fit me are Bath, Oxford & the Costwolds, or Stonehenge & Salisbury.

I did Stonehenge & Salisbury with my children in tow a few years ago and enjoyed it. You can certainly manage the trip easily on your own, but having the guide meant that I didn't have to herd the kittens and deal with logistics along the way.

Were I on my own I'd probably do one of the others, but that's more to do with my own interests.

I haven't been on any of them, but asked a few days ago about the Oxford & Cotswolds walk (click on my name to find the thread if you like). The consensus was that that's a lot of ground to cover in one day. If you're OK with that, it might be a good one. If you want something more in depth, one of the others might be better.

Bath is easy to visit on your own. The tourist office offers a free guided walk of the city.

Stonehenge/Salisbury is also easy to DIY, using the Stonehenge tour bus.

If you are willing to go through the hassle of booking the advance rail tickets, you can do the day trips for less than the London Walks' price.

We did Oxford & the Cotswolds several years ago. We enjoyed it. We were given a walking tour of Oxford & a small Cotswold village, and stopped for lunch in a second Cotswold village. The guide was quite good.

Thanks all very much. I actually want to go with London walks because I don't want to worry about the logistics of the trip. I was inclined towards Oxford and the Costwolds, but now I guess maybe Bath.

You cant go wrong with any. I have done the one to Bath and it was great. You have 2 walks that hit most of the highlights, plus free time for lunch, shopping or visiting the Roman Baths.

Oxford and the Cotswolds would give you a taste of both areas...the guide that does this walk was excellent and lives in the area. We did a different tour of the areas and they were both great.

If you are interested in Stonehenge then definitely do the tour. It also includes a walk in Salisbury and a tour of the cathedral (where the best preserved copy of the Magna Carta is), and you have time again to walk around, shop, have lunch. We really enjoyed it.

I love the Explorer Days and plan to do a bunch this summer!
