London, Vienna, Prague - theater recommendations
 

Amsterdam has the Concertgebouw. Barcelona has the Palau de la Musica Catalana. Buenos Aires has the Teatro Colon.

What would be the equivalent for London, Vienna, Prague?

Any other recommendations for 'don't miss' theaters?

Depending on your particular musical tastes I would hasten to add the Liceu in Barcelona

in Vienna, there's the Staatsoper.

I've no idea (nor can I imagine caring) what the equivalent of a theatre in Barcelona is in London. Nor can I imagine any serious city has a "don't miss" theatre: a city that has such a bizarre institution is clearly devoid of real culture.

On any given night there are at least two dozen concerts, plays, musicals or operas in London I'd go to if I had unlimited time and money. And several dozen more I might go to if I had nothing better to do.

You'd undoubtedly have a different ranking. In neither case would it matter in the slightest which theatre, opera house or concert hall they programmes were on in.

What do you want to see?

Ok, the question might not be right for London.

What I'm looking for is in any of the subject cities, is there a theater known for it's remarkable interior beauty.

My wife loves to go to theaters with beautiful interior design, regardless of what's playing (except Shakespeare, LOL)

Yes, Governator, there is: The Liceu. The place has literally burned down at least three different times over the years. But if you like gilt, gold leaf, marble, and so-called "precious fabrics" you cannot go wrong in the Barcelona opera house and you will wonder where the fires ever were.

And a lot of us are waiting to see the final results of the opera house renovation in Berlin, too. Prague's opera house is also worth a visit.

Vienna - the Opera House. Take a tour if you don 't want to go to a show.

The Musikverein in Vienna is also pretty impressive - you can see it on the broadcasts of the New Year's Day concert every year.

The opera house in Prague is lovely in a very old-fashioned way. the municipal Hall is also a concert venue - the concert hall itself is quite modern but the restaurant downstairs has a nice ambience with many decorative tiles, and the upstairs french restaurant is beautiful.

there are also marionette theatres that you will find as you walk round the city - also great fun.

What part of the opera house in Prague being worth a visit did you not understand

Dukey - it is just possible that the OP was posting before your post became visible to him - the famous fodor's timelag at work.

Certainly in Vienna, the Theater an der Wien. It still looks much as it did in Beethoven's day when many of his important orchestral works had their premieres there, and it was later the stage for the premieres of the operettas of Strauss, Lehar and many others.

I don't care that you misunderstood the question. No need to get nasty.

In Vienna there are also some small and beautiful performance venues outside of the more well-known (Opera, Musikverein, Konzerthaus, etc.) like Peterskirche, Annakirche, and the Deutschen Orden (German Teutonic Order) if you are interested.

Though I'd love to go, at 193E per remaining ticket, I'll probably pass on the Opera. I'm trying to figure out the 4/7, 4/8 Konzerthaus performances. I see on youtube that Kompost 3 is a jazz band. Can someone tell me what Klangforum Wien / Wiegers is? On the website, there are dots next to each performance, what does that mean? https://konzerthaus.at/concert/eventid/53074

I'm wondering if London has anything the equivalent of NYC Broadway TKTS booth where tickets can be gotten at a discount, or some other way of getting discounted tickets.

One place is TKTS in Leicester Sq. for 1/2 price and discount tickets to many shows. You can purchase the day of the show and sometimes up to a week before. We go there our first day in London and purchase for the week.

We also look up shows in time out and go directly to the theater box office, sometimes just an hour before the show, but then there is no guarantee.

Check lastminute.com and timeout.com for info on what is available. There are tons of other sites. Just google London theater tickets or London discount tickets.

Don't forget the Globe if you are into Shakespeare. If it is of interest, you can also tour the Globe.

Musikverein seems to have several halls. Do you know which is the main one?

Be careful with Leicester Square. The official TKTS booth in the middle of the square is surrounded by agencies that charge a markup but try to pretend they are the official booth.
