London Tube (Underground) Strike

Workers have voted to stage two 24-hour strikes, starting:

--12 noon on December 31
--6.30 p.m. on January 8

Betcha a million of our english sterling pounds they don't actually do it!

David - been through this every year.

MissPrism Dec 23rd, 2005 07:45 AM

May we have your address to claim the money?

The talks seem to have broken down at the moment,

david_west Dec 23rd, 2005 07:48 AM

they always do.

KidsToLondon Dec 23rd, 2005 07:54 AM

Yeah, I know the traditional tube workers Christmas carol:

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas,
Oi! Let's have a strike...

Not sure about the bet...what are the oddsmakers saying? Nobody in New York City would take that bet though ;-)

flanneruk Dec 23rd, 2005 01:42 PM

Yesterday the union was saying they were closed till Jan 5. And if management didn't se it the union's way by 5 pm today, that was it.

Management didn't. But the unions are meeting management again on Tuesday anyway.

All bluster. David West's right.

KidsToLondon Dec 29th, 2005 08:37 AM

Dec 29th...no resolution yet. Anyone still taking bets?

Kate Dec 29th, 2005 08:43 AM

Words cannot begin to express my feelings about Bob Crow.

A curse on him and his kind.

Tallulah Dec 29th, 2005 08:51 AM

I'm with you on that one Kate - I'm never normally one to struggle to find something to say, but I just don't have the adequate vocabulary in his case... Odious? Opportunistic? Selfish? Sly? Abhorrent? Loathsome?

Kate Dec 29th, 2005 09:00 AM

Power crazed? Arrogant? Selfish? Obnoxious?

It's no good, there just aren't the words for this slug.

Tallulah Dec 29th, 2005 09:35 AM

There's another word beginning with 'c' but I think it would be deemed unladylike to use it on here ;-)

There does not seem to be too much of a deterrent to public worker labor strikes these days.

The recent NYC transit employees strike resulted in the workers getting a crazy good deal that will essentially encourage them to strike in the future because their fines have been defrayed.

to David West

Let's see....£1,000,000 x 1.72660 (today's £-to-$ exchange rate)= $1,726,600.

linda_j Dec 30th, 2005 08:08 PM

I'm feeling nauseous.... all set for a 10 day trip to my beloved London (just received my visitor travelcard in the mail 2 days ago). Getting around to all parts of the city via the tube is one of the best deals going. What do you think are the chances that the strike will continue on through Jan. 21? After 6 trips there I was beginning to feel that I had mastered the tube lines. I would imagine that with the underground closed the bus situation will be chaos. Sure hope they can settle things quickly!!

MissPrism Dec 31st, 2005 01:39 AM

How many signed up members are there on the board?
Does everyone get a share of the £1000,000 or just the contributors to this thread?

david_west Dec 31st, 2005 02:22 AM

I trust you'll all take a cheque?

Nikki Dec 31st, 2005 04:13 AM

Is that a million sterling apiece?

BTilke Dec 31st, 2005 05:08 AM

Since FlannerUK sided so strongly with David, maybe he'll assist in the payout. But no cheques please. We'll simply arrange another London Fodorite GTG and the cash can be divided among those who attend. Should bring a record turnout!

Tallulah Dec 31st, 2005 07:24 AM

Am slightly confused - because I'm planning to go out 'south of the river' later and so was checking www.tfl.gov.uk - and according to that, there are very few problems on the tube. Admittedly my local station is shut but I'm sure I can live with getting a bus to the next one...

KidsToLondon Dec 31st, 2005 07:51 AM

How about £1,000,000 worth of Orange Cards?
