London tube tickets
 

Hi,

I am quite confused with London tube ticket options. We are 3 adults and one 3 yr old, staying in London for 3 full days. Apart from a 2 hr bus tour as a quick intro to the city, we plan to take the tube everywhere. What type of tube ticket makes most sense and will be most economical for this trip?

The first question: what days of the week will you be travelling?

The second question: if travelling during the week (Mon-Fri), will you start your journey before 9:30am?

Mon-Fri before 9:30 would be peak travels.

If you do peak travels on <b>at least 2 of your 3-days</b>, then 3-day travel card at &pound;16.40 is the cheapest option.

Conversely, if <b>at least 2 of your 3-days are non-peak</b>, Oyster card &quot;Pay as You Go&quot; is cheaper. This is because of daily caps (&pound;4.60 for off-peak/weekends, &pound;6.10 for peak travels).

The 3yr old travels free.

We are there Thurs, Fri, Sat. Unlikely to start before 9:30, so it sounds like the Oyster card is the one for us. Can we buy this card at any tube station? Can we use 1 card for all 3 or does it have to be one card per person?

You will need 2 cards, your 3 year old can get in with one of you.

Just go to the info booth at any tube stop. I think the larger tube stops(i.e. the ones like London Bridge, Paddington, Kings Cross, Victoria, Liverpool Street or any other with several lines going in and out) have longer hours. But on Thurs during the day any tube stop in central London will be manned.

Just ask for 2 Oyster pay as you go and tell them how much you want to put on it!

OK, if you're not travelling before 9:30, then Oyster Pay as You Go would work. Load &pound;13.80 (&pound;4.60 off peak for 3 days).

You'll need to buy 3 Oyster Cards for 3 adults at a manned tube station. You'll also pay &pound;3 per card as deposit (you'll get it back at the station when you no longer need it).
