London Tube Stops-Confused!
 

I am looking at a London street Map and also a London Underground Map. The London Steert map has Tube Stations on it and in comparison to the Underground map, these appear to be the MAIN stops (such as Paddington, Bayswater, South Kensington, etc.) <BR>However, the underground map has several other locations on it not on any street map I have looked at(such as Fulham Broadway, St James Wood, Swiss Cottage-just naming these as examples). <BR> <BR>My question (which may sound stupid) are these also actual Tube stops or just streets indicated to show their proximity to the actual tube stops? If they are Tube stops why do street maps not show them so you will have a better idea of where you CAN actually catch a tube?

Hi <BR>St John's Wood, Swiss Cottage, etc are indeed tube stops. I can't answer for your street map, but the tube stops mentioned above are not really in the center of London so perhaps that's why they are not on the street map. For a comprehensive look at the Underground, you really need to look at both an <BR>Underground map and a street map. The disadvantage of the Tube map is that it's hard to gauge distances between stops. You may look at it and think to take a train from one stop to another, but in reality it may be faster to just walk a block or two. You may just need a better street map.

Hi <BR> <BR>I would recommend you buy an A to Z map of London when you arrive, it is the most accurate map of London available and covers all of London, not just the centre. All tube stations, and in fact, every street in the whole city, is mapped. <BR> <BR>This is now available in pocket size books too. <BR>

The stations that appear on the tube map are indeed accessible tube stations. <BR>The advice regarding the A-Z Guide is excellent advice you should follow. The underground map leaves a lot to be desired since it is not to any recognizable scale. For example, the map suggests it's a short walk from the Gloucester Road Stop to South Kensington; it's actually a five block walk and two of those blocks are truly lengthy. The A-Z Guide will give you a much better perspective of distances.

Wes, <BR> <BR>Your critism of the Tube map is somewhat harsh. It is designed this way because a map made to scale is very unclear and hard to read. London Underground have produced a map that shows the system to scale - you'll appreciate the current map if you see the one to scale! <BR> <BR>There are many stations and lines close together, making it very hard to read. The current map is designed to be easy to read and understand for travellers on the Underground. <BR> <BR>My suggestion is always have an additional map (e.g. A-Z, as has been suggested). <BR> <BR>www.londontransport.co.uk is a useful web site. <BR> <BR>Mike
