London to Glasgow Roadtrip

Hi,
My daughters and I are planning a two week road trip from London to Glasgow in August. We have never seen the English countryside or Scotland and we are enquiring about "must-see" places to stop along the way. Our travel interests include history, literature and nature.
Thanks for the help.

Hi rmtravel - I think we need a few more details from you to get an idea of what you'd like.

How many stops (overnights) are you planning in each place?

Do you want to spend any time in London?

Is this a round trip or will you be leaving the UK from Scotland?

What is your budget for lodging, etc.

There are many people here who are very knowledgeable - just give them a little more to go on!

Time to get some guidebooks from the library. Or look at Fodors Destinations above. I like the Michelin Green Guides because they rate sights. I don't always agree with their ratings, but it's a starting point. I also like the DK guides. Too heavy to carry on a trip but good for the photos.

For planning the driving use a mapping site like theaa.com or www.multimap.com.

Do you plan to venture north of Glasgow?

A bit more information would be helpful. Do you mean to spend the full two weeks traveling to Glasgow? Just to get you started, you could travel to O-ford and the Cotswolds, then either go further west into Wales and through Hereford, Ludlow, Shewsbury and to Chester all making for great stops. Or go up through the Peak District National Park and Bu-ton, Edale and Castelton. The area is known for its pretty villages, moors and grand houses such as Chatsworth House. Then head for the Lake District, Dumfires and Galloway in Scotland and into Glasgow. There are many wonderful places to visit with either itinerary. As suggested, get some guidebooks as well as a good map.

Sorry but my key for the letter before y does not work. So O-ford and Bu-ton.

Does your two weeks include London and Scotland or only the bits in between?

It would be difficult for us to create an itinerary for you (though many of us have done just that for others) -- it generally works out better if you come to the table w/ at least some ideas/a basic plan and then we can help you tweak things.
