London to frankfurt recommended visits in between for well travelers

HELLO! I am looking for suggestions, a couple and their 16 year old, well travelers are planing a trip from London to Frankfurt (son is studying there) but want to make a few stops in between (stops in Amsterdam and Hamburg a most) I am looking for recommendations of little towns, cities out of the ordinary, they are traveling by train end of June/ July. Thank you!

No Paris? How long do they have to do that?

Can take high-speed trains from London to Amsterdam (if lots of time maybe stopping in Bruges, one of most popular smaller cities in Europe - incredibly cute - about 4 hours to Amsterdam. www.eurostar.com.

Amsterdam to Hamburg 3-4 hours too.

Hamburg to Frankfurt about 4 hours (www.bahn.de/en for easy to reference schedules for all of Europe. The famous Rhine Gorge between Koblenz and Bingen could be a great stop - hole up in a riverside wine town and take boats thru the Rhine Gorge (www.k-d.com).

If time Paris would be a natural start - just a few hours from London via Eurostar train.

For lots on trains check www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com; www.ricksteves.com.

How much time will they have, how many nights?
What does “well travelers” mean, that they are healthy or that they have travelled a lot, so are well travelled?
Haarlem, Leiden, Vermeer, Ghent, Brugge, etc.

Marburg is a nice smaller university town with classic castle on a hill near Frankfurt for a nice low-key stop.
