London to Dover
 

My husband and I are planning a 6 day trip to England and then to Paris for another 6 days. The first 3 days will be spent in London and then want to make our way over to Dover. Any suggestions on a historical and picturesque drive for the remaining days in England. Thanks.

Are you intending to take the ferry to France, are you driving a hire car once you leave London, are you intending to drive to Paris?

If so - RECONSIDER your plans.

London to Dover is a 2 hour drive and the major point of interest is Canterbury

You are looking for how to spend 3 days between London and Dover (actually Ashford since the Eurostar doesn't stop in Dover). I am assuming you are only renting the car for those 3 days since it doesn't make any sense to drive to Paris.

So tak ethe train to LGW, pick up you car rhere so you will avoid all of the nasty south London Traffic. You will have 3 days to explore East Sussex and Kent. Just a FEW of theplaces you could visit would be: Chartwell (Churchill's country house), Hever Castle (where Ann Boleyn's family lived), Sissinghurst (the most AMAZING garden), Scotney Castle, Bodiam Castle, Rye, Dover Castle, and Canterbury. If you book a B&B somewhere near or south of Maidstone you will be commute distance from all these places. Then you can turn in the car at Ashford and board the Eurostar.

You could leave the car in London and catch the train to Paris, via the Euro Tunnel. You would only need the car three days and would not pay any fee for returning the car elsewhere than where you picked it up. Tunbridge Wells and Caterbury would be the pick of the bunch, return the car and have your days in London, then catch the train to Paris.

1) That would mean driving IN London which is a silly idea.

2) There are usually no drop off fees in the UK (or seldom any). One can pick up the car at LGW (or in Dover or in Canterbury or just about anywhere) and drop it at Ashford for the same price.

Perhaps I should have said 'Greater London'. I agree that driving in London is to be avoided! Apologies if I am mistaken about the charges for drop-off location - I thought that was a universal money spinner for the agent. This must be the only thing in the UK that is not a rip off!! :)
