London to Brockenhurst

My husband and I are traveling from London to Brockenhurst in late November and will need to rent a car. Trying to figure out the most sensible, and inexpensive way to go. We will be returning the car to Heathrow less than a week later. Don't think renting a car in London is a good idea, since we're Americans and the driving will be tough. We have driven outside of London and that's not hard for us.
But should we train to Southampton, or somewhere else en route, or go back to back to Heathrow to rent the car from there?
Does anyone know how far the rental car locations are from where the train lets you off at Southampton or at Heathrow?
Any help will be most appreciated.

Take the train from London to Southampton Airport (Parkway) station; car hire is close by. Return car at LHR.

Sensible advice above.

and you could get the train to Brockenhurst and get Enterprise to drop the car off there for you/pick up.

and you could hire a vintage car for the holiday as Brokenhurst is also the base for a vintage car rental company

Another option -- You could easily take public transport to LHR and collect your car there. It is very easy to drive out of the airport and you will have a much larger choice of companies. Before you do Enterprise - make sure they will allow a one way from Brockenhurst back to LHR.

Thanks. We're checking LHR to save money because it avoids the one way rental add on.
Appreciate your thoughts.

This past June I had planned to pick up our rental at LHR because that"s what I'd always done. This trip we were headed south and east to Kent and at some point realized what a mess the M25 can be. I switched our pick up from Heathrow to Gatwick. Not much difference if coming from London. The Gatwick rental ended up being cheaper than Heathrow and we were closer to our destination. No back tracking. If headed to Southampton/ Brockenhurst, Gatwick is closer than LHR.

Good point -- either airport would be good, and LGW is very easy.
