London to Amsterdam and other itinerary help

A college aged nephew will be leaving London for 12 days of travel through Europe in mid July. He's thinking of doing Amsterdam (2 nights), Paris (3 nights), Munich (2 nights), Innsbruck (1 night), Venice (1 night) and Rome (3 nights), where he flies back to the US. This is his first trip abroad. Yes, it's a bit of a whirlwind, but he may be traveling solo and wants to see as much as he reasonably can. I think it's a very doable schedule.

I'm trying to help him plan but realize I need my Fodorite's help.

Any suggestions for getting from London to Amsterdam? Would trains be preferable to flying? Which train site should he look at? For flights, any suggestions for airlines/sites? I see where BA has a one way non-stop (1 hour 15 minutes) for $80 from Gatwick to AMS at 9:20am. That looks reasonable although I'm wondering if it would be less hassle to just take a fast train.

From Amsterdam to Paris, Paris to Munich, Munich to Innsbruck, Innsbruck to Venice, and Venice to Rome, which train sites should he use and is booking ahead on any of those routes advisable?

Thanks!

From Amsterdam to Paris, take the Thalys train. Yes, book in advance to save a lot of money on discounted fares.

cheryllj, I misread your response. How embarrassing. Anyway, thanks for the link. That will get him from Amsterdam to Paris.

It may make more sense to go to Paris first then to Amsterdam - he can get the Eurostar to Paris and the Thalys to Amsterdam, then go on to Munich from there.

These plans don't seem to include any travel time. Trains take time, flying is expensive, and takes time. For flying you need to allow half a day at least, for train travel sometimes more - certainly to Munich.

If he wants to go to Amsterdam first then he could fly, or take the train and (overnight)ferry.

He should book as many of these routes ahead of time as he can - buying them on the day will be very expensive.
