London - Thistle - Charing Cross - Comments?

Has anybody recently stayed at this hotel in London?

Thanks.

Hi,

Have you enterd the hotel name in the "search this forum" box?

Mucky Sep 13th, 2004 04:28 AM

Hi Myer,
No not recently but a few years ago.
Hotel itself was fine rooms were typical.
Location was not too good for walking after dark and 3 cars were broken into in the carpark.Thankfully my old crate was left alone.

It may well be fine now but this was my experience.

The hotel is a classic railway terminus hotel, in about as good a location as you can get. It's one of the few London hotels i've ever stayed in (about a year ago), and while its rooms are hardly lavish, it really wasn't possible to fault it.

Mucky's comments are odd. I've walked through the area at almost every time of the day and night, and wouldn't think twice about it. As wouldn't Mrs F - not least because many of London's night buses pass by, and there are really always people around.

It is close to a street with a lot of Young People's clubs and bars, and many of London's main stations get very raucous between pub chucking-out time and the last train home. So it wouldn't be surprising if some drunken yobs smashed a few windows of cars in the forecourt where taxis rank in front of the hotel. But as long as you don't go out of your way to tangle with these louts, there are enough other people around to ensure their aggression is channeled at other, equally paralytic, morons. However, this hotel doesn't actually have a car park, so I wonder if Mucky is talking about the right hotel.

I don't know the hotel but I would have ABSOLUTELY no qualms with regard to the area in terms of safety. And so much is within walking distance - personally I don't think that you could really find a better location.

Thanks for the comments.

I'll recommend to our friends that they keep their reservation.

Flanner, could I have mistaken it for another Thistle somewhere else, Kings Cross perhaps?
I have stayed in various places and maybe it is a possibly that I got it wrong, the car park was behind and a railway station was close by.And boy it was a scary area.
Please let me know what you think and If I discussed the wrong place I apologise.

Just to clarify some of the comments - this hotel does not have its own car park but uses Spring Gardens car park nearby. I imagine that the car break-ins that Mucky referred to occurred in this public car park. As others have said, you cannot get more central than the Charing Cross Thistle, incidently the monument in the front of the hotel is where all distances to London are measured from. Also, the area around the hotel is very safe and as it?s located above a main train station every inch of the area is fully covered by CCTV and usually with a heavy police presence of metroplolitan and London transport police. The police would immediately pounce on anyone attempting to smash a car window in front of this hotel.

I've always been tempted to try this hotel because of the great location. Was concerned that it might be too noisy though, what with being at the train station.
I noticed that no one on this thread has mentioned noise as being a problem though - presumably you don't hear the trains?

Just completed a weeklong stay at Thistle Charing Cross yesterday. Noise is not a problem. The neighborhood is fine. Excellent location close to everything. Quick, early check-in. Rooms are a bit small. Maid service generally good except had to keep asking for more towels. Restaraunts and bars and general hotel services were way overpriced..

Hi all,
Did some checking (asked Mrs Muck) I got it wrong.
The car park problems were at Thistle Kings Cross, and not Charing Cross.
I apologise, rewind and ignore my first post....lol
