London Theatre Recommendations

I have been looking at other Fodor threads on London Theatre but still not sure what show to get tickets for. I plan to also try the Leicester Square ticket booth when I arrive. After checking the internet, it appears that Oliver! is pretty much sold out the days I will be in London.

I have already been to Billy Elliott, Phantom, Grease and Mary Poppins in London. I have seen Jersey Boys and Mamma Mia here in the states. So, of the many others left what musical or plays to you really recommend right now.

I noticed Judi Dench is in Madame Sade (think I got the name wrong from memory) and that looks interesting. Also, 39 Steps.. Any others you have seen...

Thanks...

The Woman in Black is excellent - really spooky and full of suspense! You can get cheap tickets easily for it too. I saw it the other week and we got tickets for £11.50 (plus booking fee) at www.lastminute.com

We loved Hairspray and Sound of Music. My only complaint with Hairspray is we were in the first row of the balcony (which I thought would be wonderful seats) and there was NO leg room - very uncomfortable!

Blood Brothers has been on forever, but if you haven't seen it, it is very good.

I just purchased 2 tickets on-line to Calendar Girls playing at the Noel Coward Theatre. It got good writeups and I really enjoyed the movie. If I have more time, I would like to see Jersey Boys.

All great suggestions- I was wondering about Calendar Girls- saw the movie- and is very British. Definitely will consider Women in Black - I like the price!

I recently saw Three Days of Rain at the Apollo Theater and enjoyed it very much! Although I think it ends its run early May...not sure when your trip is.

Another vote for Blood Brothers if you have not seen it. I also recommend Arcadia, though not a musical, which I think opens towards the end of May.

I was suprised to see tickets for Calendar Girls at the half price booth yesterday. (oddly they were selling woman in black tickets only at full price).

I have to say that I find the idea of patricia hodge, sian phillips and linda bellingham in the nip oddly alluring....

I just got back two weeks ago. Anyone in London before 30 May should consider going to Spring Awakening, very fresh and exciting with great music and dance routines. Saw three Days of Rain which was brilliant but ended 9 May. Also saw Cages aux Folles, average show but not worth it if you ask me.

Forgot to say that we couldn't find any seat to Mamma Mia on that weekend. if you want to catch it, I suggest you book in advance.
