London Theatre Attire

We are going to London on a sightseeing trip and plan to go to the theatre, can anyone tell me if my husband needs a coat and tie? He is hoping he doesn't.

Thanks, Jopat

No tie necessary - might need a coat if it is chilly outside. No need for a jacket either

Where what you (and he) likes. The theatre is not dressy - unless you are out on a special occasion like an anniversary dinner/theatre night out to a posh restaurant and want to dress up.

Just whatever you would wear to dinner out at home.

Wear what you like. But if you wear shorts people will point and laugh and possibly throw stones.

and if he does wear shorts, be sure to also wear a baseball cap - worn backwards of course . . . :)

If his legs are HOT. (and I do not mean temperature-wise)...tell him to wear shorts!

We WILL point and laugh. I'm serious.

I'm always disappointed that London theatre goers are no dressier than they are. A jacket and tie aren't necessary.

We only dressed up once to go to the theater, dress slacks, no jeans. The other three times we usually came straight from sightseeing and were in casual clothes and were not at all out of place, although when my 13 year old daughter was called up on stage at Spamalot, I wished she wasn't wearing her jeans!

Now what's wrong with dungarees, a t-shirt and a baseball cap worn backwards along with white sneakers? Many go to the theatre that way all the time and I've yet to see them refuse to take their money.

Most people go to the theatre to see what's on the stage, not what's on the audience. If anyone is concerned by what you're wearing, their opinion is not worth worrying about.

Thanks to everyone, you have made my husband very happy. I promise he won'tt wear shorts.

I wonder if it's show-dependent, i.e. is one expected to dress up when seeing, say, Les-Miserables rather than Mamma-Mia. Anyway, I agree that it's the show people wish to see, not the audience. Jopat, which show are you planning on? Got your tickets yet? There are some pretty sweet discounts going around these days, see Broadwaybox.com/london

SomeDude, it isn't show dependant, unless you're seeing some big opening night performance at the Royal Opera House.

Well, if you are going to see the Rocky Horror show you might want to dig out your stockings ;-)

And get your nazi and nun togs on for the singalong sound of music.
