London Theater District Hotel - not pricey
 

Four of us will be in London one night this November. We are taking the Eurostar from Paris and staying over night and plan to see a show and some sights. Given that we are already paying for our apartment that night in Paris and the fact that we will not be spending much time in the London hotel (just a place to sleep), can anyone recoommend a good clean hotel in the theater district that is not too pricey?

Theatre District doesn't really mean much. If you want to be near the show - we'd need to know which one. There are Theatres from Victoria, to the southbank, to Covent Garden, to Soho, to Haymarket to elsewhere. If you know which show you are seeing, then we can tell you about hotels nearby

But just about every hotel in central London is w/i easy reach of most every theatre by tube.

What is your budget?

thanks janisj - we have not decided yet, but are considering "Priscilla Queen of the Desert". In terms of price, anything under $200 would be great.

the Covent Garden Travelodge is smack in the heart of what most would deem the West End Theatre district- with the overwhelming majority of major London theatres

and if you act far in advance Fodorites have reported snagging rooms at 29 pounds or so - compare it to a Holiday Inn in the U.S.

I have to agree with Janis, having stayed in what you would undoubtedly think is a "pricey" hotel in Covent Garden more than once...if price is really that important and it usually is for most of us, I'd be just as concerned about the ability to get there from St. Pancras and the train as well as from the hotel to and from the theatre and then back to St. Pancras.

Taking the Tube is going to be cheaper than a taxi and probably faster than a bus, depending on the day and time....nothing like "seeing where you are" (in the bus) and seeing the SAME SPOT for 15 minutes in a traffic jam.

When you put in your date be sure to do it day/mo/yr, click on 'specific date', enter 'London' and search, and then page down to Covent Garden. They show £29 for the odd Sundays in Nov (when most theatres are dark), but mostly £65-£98. That is a good location and well w/i your budget (even at £98)

St Pancras is about 10 minutes by Tube from "the theater district", so you'd do better finding somewhere nice there to cut the hassle of carting luggage around London. And it'll be cheaper to boot.

For one overnight, how much hassle could the luggage be?? I'd assume they are leaving everything but a change of clothes back in the flat in Paris. I personally would rather stay in an area near the sites/scenes/theatres/Covent Garden/river than at St Pancras.

right, we will just have day packs, no luggage. I looked at the travel lodge as suggested, rate is 95/night for 3 November - my luck - no 29 deal for me - I'll keep checking

The St Pancras area is still rather seedy and derelict IMO, except for the gleaming restored rail stations - not a desirable place for most tourists to stay

Via trip advisor I saw "Seven Dials" - looks basic...any thoughts?

Seven Dials is a small but well-known road junction in the West End of London in Covent Garden where seven streets converge. At the centre of the roughly-circular space is a pillar bearing six (not seven) sundials

Seafox: I assume you are asking about the Seven Dials Hotel -- not the intersection.

In any case, the location of the Seven Dials is terrific - near Covent Garden, Shaftsbury Avenue, 4 tube stations, and some neat shops like Neal's Yard Dairy. But I'd guess the hotel will run more than the TravelLodge. If you can get it for less than that £95 it might be a good choice. On the whole, it gets very good reviews w/ very few poor/terrible. I've walked past it several times but never been inside.

£95 currently is only approx $145.

don't laugh, but what about the Y on great russell st?

Try Citadines Aparthotel Trafalgar Square www.citadines.com although it may be cheaper on www.laterooms.com. (seems to be around £105 pn). Walking distance from Shaftsbury Avenue and the Palace Theatre (for Priscilla) and close to Charing Cross tube. As there are four of you travelling it may be cheaper to book a 2bedroom apt.

You may be lucky with Travelodge Covent Garden but they only release the £29 rooms periodically and you have to be really quick in booking.

well folks here's the update. I put together a package of information for the 4 of us and over cocktails we made the decision. The choices included Seven Dials, Citadines, the Y, Travelodge, and then a few at the other end to include the Morgans Group St Martins Lane Hotel. Not making the connection that the Delano in South Beach, a regular Winter haunt of our group, is owned by the Morgans group I dove into a discussion of options..... needless to say my vision of a low cost option was tossed under the cocktail table! So, we have a one night package, the rooms, tickets for Priscilla and dinner at Asia de Cuba in the hotel. Well, it eliminates any planning stress.... and at just under the price of the ten nights in our Paris apartment it must be a deal.... I don't usually do trip reports on our Paris vacations, but this year I just may.....

November is usually not high season in London, there may be oodles of specials out there. You can try some of the internet booking agents (cheaphotels.com) or you can even try priceline...I have heard people get some pretty amazing deals off peak through priceline....

Anywhere in central London will be absolutely fine...public transportation in London is outstanding and in some respects can be a lot of fun (double decker buses!)....unlike NYC, at 2200 at night, when most of the shows let out, tube service in London is still running at 3 or 4 minute intervals, the tube stations are crowded (no need to worry about desolate location where muggers might lurk) or you can take a bus and see the capital at night. Almost any Central location in London will do and like I say, at that time of the year, you can probably find some real bargains.
