London Theater

what is the correct dress for an evening show? Do the men need a suit?

He could wear a suit, but he'd probably look out of place. Regular slacks and a sport shirt are fine. If he wore a t-shirt and jeans he wouldn't be alone.

In the 21st century, you go to the London theatre any which way you want...

I have seen men come in with a suit and tie and dress shoes

I have seen men come in with blue jeans, a t shirt and sneakers.

You know something.....they were all allowed to stay for the entire performance.

Are suits needed in London unless we are going to a 5 star restaurant?
Thanks

NO. In fact I only travel with a blazer or sportcoat to London and eat at some very fine restaurants and still notice men in dress shirt without jacket at all. There may be a few places that require a jacket, but I haven't run into them. I strongly suspect that even the "trendier"
or more modern 5 star places don't require a jacket. And the summer also becomes more casual than the winter.

I agree completely with Neo. When we were in London last month and attended several theatre performances there was a WIDE variety of dress from coats and ties to sport shirts to jeans and sweatshirts.

The only time I wear a suit to the theatre is if I have come straight from work.

Generally just wear what you would wear to an ordinary restaurant etc.

NO SHORTS! (Really Americans this can't be stressed enough)
