There are a lot of benefits to renting an apartment or flat rather than a hotel room(s) in London. And it's often cheaper than one or two hotel rooms for the week. You will have a lot more room to unpack and settle in, and with a living room, there is space to properly relax after a long day of touring.

Having a kitchen can also mean a big savings on the food bill. A quick stop at a grocery store and you can make breakfast in, keep beverages and snacks on hand and maybe prepare a meal or two. Eating in restaurants for every meal can really add up.

Here are some websites for apartment rentals in central London...

London House Apartments: <b>www.london-house.com</b>

Yourstay.com: <b>www.yourstay.com</b>

If you do rent an apartment or flat, there are a few staples you may want to bring from home to save having to buy them (at UK prices) once you arrive. Here are a few...

Salt &amp; Pepper shaker
other condiments your family uses
Handi-wipes
Ziploc bags/plastic wrap
coffee/coffee filters/tea
sugar/sugar substitute
paper napkins

Take what you think you'll use in a week's time (or leave behind what you don't use) and you'll have extra room for souvenirs in your suitcase on the trip home.

<u>Transport for London Maps</u>

Underground (The Tube): <b>http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/pdfdocs/colormap.pdf</b>
(more at http://tube.tfl.gov.uk/content/tubemap/default.asp)

Tourist Bus: <b>http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/pdfdocs/tourist.pdf</b>

General Bus: <b>http://www.tfl.gov.uk/buses/pdfdocs/centlond.pdf</b>
(more at http://www.tfl.gov.uk/buses/buses_map.shtml)

The most convenient way to carry these maps is to download them into a pocket computer or PDA that has Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on it. You can zoom, pan, and keep your present location on the screen where you can refer to it without unfolding a map every time. You can get an Audiovox <i>Thera</i> on eBay for less than $100 (it's an 800/1900 cell phone and 56k Web terminal, too).

flygirl, don't understand your question, can you further explain?

I have been able to bookmark those threads, but I think you mean something else?

I think she means keeping your thread at the top of the page, rather than it sinking to the bottom.

I just discovered a great site, called Tube Guru. You just click on a tube stop, and it gives you nearby shopping, restaurants, ATM locations, etc... Here's the link:

That link didn't work for me. Try going in through Transport for London's front door:

I find this site useful. You put in a post code (similar to a zip code) and it lists nearby shops restauarants etc as well as useful things like Post Offices and Banks.

<b>How to bookmark this (or any other thread)</b>

Put your mouse on the thread title, in this case &quot;London Superthread.&quot;

Click the right mouse button. You will see a dropdown menu containing &quot;Bookmark This Link&quot; or &quot;Add to Favorites...&quot; or some such language. Click on it and follow the instructions.

If you want to name the bookmark with the thread title, you can change it during the subsequent process.

Now you can go to your favorite threads without adding extraneous crap to them.

mrkindallas Apr 12th, 2007 06:00 PM

Robespierre, I'm sorry it bothers you so much that some people choose to bookmark things in a way that you don't agree with. I for one, prefer to be able to click on my screenname in Fodors and access threads in the frame there. Not only does it bring them up in the order in which one last received a response, but it also allows me to access my favorites from any computer, including an Internet cafe while on my trip. Maybe from now on, instead of being honest about bookmarking, I'll make some rude comment instead since it'll give me the same result.

kit Apr 12th, 2007 06:32 PM

Me too, Mr!

Robespierre Apr 13th, 2007 06:53 AM

It doesn't bother me - it adds extraneous crap to the forum and is, in my view, very selfish to clutter up the threads for one's own convenience.

Sorry if this view offends you.

mrkindallas Apr 13th, 2007 01:41 PM

The point is that your comment does no different. It clutters the thread with extraneous crap. If one is selfish, so is the other. I wish that Fodors had a button that I could use to save certain threads on the website, but that button doesn't currently exist. Since your request for the heading change was met within 24 hours, perhaps you could make another request to Fodor's rather than griping to other users about how they use the forum. I will continue to bookmark by posting in a thread because it is the best way for me to be able to access my favorite threads while not at my computer...at least until Fodor's lets me mark a thread a favorite on the website.

Robespierre Apr 13th, 2007 02:27 PM

Email the threads to a webmail account (see the link at the bottom?) Then you can access them from Ulan Bator, for all I care.

That way you can keep your bookmarking posts out of everyone else's lives.

(And by the way, my post isn't equivalent, because once this discussion is over, my posting is over. Bookmarking posts go on forever.)
