London is great for kids, don't miss Tower of London, Imperial War Museum,Millenium Eye, Kensington Gardens is nice for a break/picnic.While the exchange rate is terrible right now A great dept store for kids is Daisy and Tom's in Chelsea (toys, books, clothes, puppet shows (very English)and a real inside carousel. For flights between London & CPH try Ryanair and easyjet

Thanks again everybody. Lots of helpful points.

Meath1: I like the tower, etc. ideas. Daisy and Tom's - 1st I've heard of it. Neat idea.

Isabel, Dukey, Blackduff: Fly vs train from Stock. to Copen. is a tough call. But, you may have noticed a new post I made this morning, asking about Helsinki vs Copenhagen. there is definitely an overnight ferry from Stock. to Helsinki, and with the long days I understand from a Swedish friend that it has spectacular scenery. I'm just not sure whether Helsinki or Copen. is the better destination for city #2. Thoughts?

It's tough to just say which city is best. Helsinki isn't so active as Copenhagen but it has it's own warmth.

First, you can ride the boat from Stockholm to Helsinki. Take a trip during the day, so you can visit all of the islands. Both Sweden and Finland have large archepelagos (sp?). You won't find this elsewhere.

Helsinki is a compact city and you do have some special treats to visit this city. In August, you probably can still see the midnight-sun during the evening. If you're staying in a hotel or elsewhere which are up a few hundreds, the sun will not set. You're kids might remember this for quite a few years.

The daily market is lovely where you can buy some of the Baltic herring direct from the boats. They've told me that they have two hundred ways of fixing the herring.

I don't know which city would be best to visit. I think the boat ride is pretty special.

Blackduff: Thanks for the additional tantalizing points. If you noticed my other post on the Copen. vs. Helsinki decision, you'll see we decided both would be great, so we're cancelling London this trip and doing both Helsinki and Copen! So, assuming I can book us on the Silja line, we're riding the ferry.

I lived in Sweden for ten years, so I'm pretty positive about Scandinavia. I worked with Finnair, so I did visit to Helsinki often. During my travels, I passed through Copenhagen each ten days/two weeks. The only negative about Scandinavia is the winter days in Helsinki. It is the coldest city I've ever visited.

I've read the other posts and they're positive about Finland too.

I'm sure you're going to remember some wonderful memories. I left Sweden in 1988 and I still have good friends who still visit my home in France. It was a good time in my life.

Blackduff: I wholeheartedly agree--this trip will be memorable (now, if I can just find apartments that fit 5!!!)

Ironically, my sister and her husband go to Sweden every year as he did his PhD in Uppsala. It never occurred to me before to make this trip. And of course, we're not doing it in winter (so your warning about Helsinki temps, knock wood, will not apply).

Cheers.
