We didn't have problems arriving in LHR.

Transferring? Yep.

Getting from the amenities area of Terminal 3 to the gates? Yep.
(It's nearly a mile to walk if you're flying AA).

Inverness and Aberdeen are better to visit for what is nearby: castles, coast, distilleries, lochs, etc. Inverness is ok but the attractions include Loch Ness, Cawdor Castle, Clava Cairns, Culloden battlefield and Glenmorangie Distillery and Dunrobin Castle up the road. Aberdeen is in castle country.

I have flown through LHR a couple of times but it has been around thirty years. I can remember walking a long way with my two year old on my shoulders. I will look in to the business class or I believe Delta has a preferred economy or something along those lines.
We plan on staying in London for 3or 4 days and then see Scotland. I thought about taking the day train up to Scotland and renting a car to sight see and return.
Could you recommend a place to stay in London. We prefer 4 star if they are available. Any tour groups that you might recommend?

There are hundreds of hotels in central London - What is your budget? (4 star really doesn't tell us anything)

. . . Just had a hunch since there are/were bases near Edzell and Brindisi. . .

Once you are up in Scotland you won't need/want a car in Edinburgh. Stay there a couple of days and then pick up a rental car to explore the countryside.

I posted and the site took forever to update. My post 'took' but didn't 'top' the thread. Hopefully this will.

That's not useful. UK hotels obtain their official ratings based upon the level of amenities, NOT quality/cleanliness/service. You need to speak in $ or GBP per night.

With four people, you may want a 2-3 bedroom flat. Most European hotels, unless they have special family rooms, would have two double beds MAXIMUM. Would your teenage son otherwise share a European double bed (basically an American full size) with your teenage daughter?

What are you touring? In London, you can just join a London Walks tour as you wish (www.walks.com). In Scotland, you're best off with self-driven once you leave Edinburgh.

And make sure you take advantage of the Days Out Guide two-fers for London: www.daysoutguide.co.uk. You'll save a ton(ne).

We usually get two rooms with two beds and the guys are in one room and the girls in the other. I would like to keep the rooms around 250.00 each for the night but I am able to go higher in London if necessary.

I will definitely check out the Days out Guide. Thanks a bunch

I am continuing to check airline fares. I live in Wichita KS which is unbelievably hard to fly in and out of. I found tickets on American for upgraded economy around 7,000 total and first class for 16,000 to London and back to Wichita. I will keep checking on the flights out of Edinburgh/Glasgow.

I assume you mean 16,000 each ticket?

I am continuing to check airline fares.

We split our fares between the U.S. RT and a European open jaw. It turned out to be cheaper. On the other hand, we don't pay for a hotel in NYC.

But you might find a RT from Chicago to England, and schedule same day flights on both end for a Wichita-Chicago RT.

Check into a flat. You can have the whole lot together and probably beat $500/night total.

Check out Oakwood.com too, although their stock of apartments will increase the closer you are to arrival date because it's mainly a long-term solution (business lodging 30+ days, they'll do shorter stays in Europe if they have openings; in Asia they offer shorter stays as a matter of course).

You're right, the business class was 16k and the 1st class was 22k. sorry- I believe I have checked too many flights.

I will check out oakwood.com tonight. thanks I considered homeaway.com for a week in Scotland as well but thought that might include too much driving.
