London & Scotland in 3 weeks

My husband and me are planning a 3 week trip to UK this Sept. The first 5 days are going to be in London and we seem to have enough ideas on how to spend those days there.

We are undecided about what to do with the rest of the 2+ weeks. There are two options we are considering -

1. Should we drive down to Edinburgh from London and on the way cover some parts of UK (Lake District, Liverpool, Yorkshire Moors), dispose off the rented car in Edinburgh and do parts of Scotland without car (We want to cover Edinburgh, Stirling, Aberdeen, Skye)

2. Fly from London to Edinburgh and take a car to cover Scotland. So basically skip some of the England regions we might have covered otherwise.

We both are used to driving on the left (we are from India). And want to drive around on our own on this trip. But it needn't be a trip filled with driving. We love natural beauty and want to get a good feel for some non-touristy side of Scotland. Guess we will have a good deal of museums, theatre and bldings to do in London. So might not be looking for more of that in the rest of the trip.

Any thoughts and pointers - on destinations as well as mode of travelling - are welcome. As usual we are starting our trip planning a little late

Thanks & Rgds

You might be better with option #2,fly to Edinburgh, rent a car to cover Scotland and if you find that you have seen all you want in under the two weeks, you can still drive to the Lake District,Yorkshire Moors from Edinburgh, its not that far. Hope this helps.

Do you have your plane tickets? If not, you might want to fly "open jaw": into London and out of either Glasgow or Edinburgh. That way, you could pick up the car on your way out of London, do some England stops on the way north to Scotland, then the rural Scotland parts, dropping the car off as you get to Edinburgh.

It would be very hard to explore the parts of Scotland and England you mention without a car. Do you have a specific interest in Liverpool, or Aberdeen?

Thanks for the replies. We suddenly realised we have a problem with our passport. It is damaged and we need to re-issue a duplicate one and may not be able to sort it out in time for a Sept trip.

So suddenly the urgency is no longer there. Let me research more and get back to this forum for advice...

Terribly disappointed abt this, though
