London restaurants and tea
Returning to London after a few years, and interested in new restaurant recommendations, anythng from Michelin to cheap and cheerful.I enjoy most cuisines, though not keen for Asian subcontinent or S.E. Asian.
I'l be staying in South Ken. about two blocks from the Tube. I'll be solo, and one or two casual dinners near my hotel, for which I don't have to dress up, would be welcome.
One evening have theatre tickets--Theatre Royal Haymarket--so that will be an early dinner, unless I treat myself to a late lunch or an afternoon cream tea before, and a light dinner later.
Speaking of tea, how about a good afternoon tea that's not the Ritz or Dorchester or F&M or Harrods?
Sightseeing locations will include the Chelsea Flower Show for which I have an all-day member's ticket. A possible half day at Kew will depend on timing. If I want tea at Maids of Honour, do I reserve in advance? Thanks

Try the Wolesley, we have had a lovely tea there and the price is right too http://www.thewolseley.com/Menu.aspx
As for restaurants, most of my circle use www.toptable.co.uk for reviews and bookings.
Enjoy London!

And we discovered a new restuarant we really loved went back 3 times on our last trip! Venosi at 87 Sloane AVNUE, from South Kensington tube station take the 360 bus to Fulhma rd and Sloane Ave. The staff is excellent and the food even better. We pln on having dinner there at least twice on our next 5 days in London.

The Goring for tea, served outside if weather is nice. About a mile from South Ken?
The new Duchess of Cambridge (aka Kate Middleton Windsor)stayed there with family before wedding.
I'd heard of it as a good place for tea!

Have you tried Cote for dinner? There is one in Covent Garden on Tavistock St good for after theatre or pre theatre. I like the one on Kensington Court off of High St Kensington, just down from the tube station

Ideas for casual meals near your hotel:
Angelsea Arms - good, reasonable pub food on Onslow Gardens below Old Brompton Road
http://www.capitalpubcompany.com/the-anglesea-arms/
Duke of Clarence - another pub, a bit more modern with good food and very reasonable

Kensington Creperie - a bit of a South Ken institution, cheap and filling, very casual creperie
http://www.kensingtoncreperie.com/
Bumpkin - a bit more expensive than the others, but very good comfort food

Med Kitchen - moderately priced Mediterranean food

great suggestions, thanks
I used to like Kensington Place very much (not so near my hotel, but still)--any good these days?
Also, how about a great Greek or Turkish restaurant?
Near my hotel, or absolutely not.

I agree with Cote as a reasonably-priced pleasant chain as is Prezzo. Both have several locations. We ate at Cote on Wardour Street and also on Kensington Court. Prezzo is in several locations. We ate several dinners at the one near the British Library and also just beside the National Portrait Gallery. There's a second one at Trafalgar Square, closer to the Charing Cross tube station.

I would second the recommendation to try Cote. There are over 20 Cote restaurants throughout London and the southern half of the country, although menus and prices may vary. It is French brasserie type food, 2 steps up from Cafe Rouge and 1 step up from Strada.
They are open all day, including breakfast, and have lower price lunch and early evening prix fixe menus as well as a la carte. Wines to suit all tastes and pockets.
Details at www.cote-restaurants.co.uk.

I swear I posted again on this. I love the Anglesea Arms. I consider it my "local" when we are in London as we always stay in that area. The dining room is away from the bar area so you can dine in peace.
The Duke of Clarence is also good and frequently appears in the 50% off listings at Toptable

On a nice day, a generous pot of good tea (and cheap wholesome food) at a table in the garden of the Brew House Cafe at Kenwood House on Hampstead Heath. Followed by a Rosskilly icecream on the walk out.
