London Restaurants

Thank you for all your help on London hotels. Now, what are your favorite restaurants. Has anyone been to Le Gavroche, Gordon Ramsey, Capital or The Square. Would you recommend any of them? Also, does Gordon Ramsey have two restaurants and, if so, which is better. Any other suggestions. Thank you in advance.

I didn't make it to any of the restaurants you mention but we did go to some very nice places--especially St. John, the "nose to tail eating" place of Chef Fergus Henderson--on our recent trip to London. If you click on my name you should be able to find my report where I provide detail about all the places we ate at. Enjoy.

We have eaten twice at The Square. It's OK but expensive by NYC standards. The tables have space between them and so its comfortable and quiet. The place is "professional", but not exciting. The last time we were there (last year) the dessert I ordered which listed ice cream as the primary ingredient on the menu came to me as a mousse. I like ice cream so I told my waiter that the dessert did not match the menu description. He said in his most haughty voice...Madam.. that is how we serve it. Our group thought that we quite amusing and asked him to bring some ice cream. He did. A new place...the Cinnamon Club, was excellent if you like fusion Indian.

Going to London in June with three boys one of which is an extremely picky eater really not adventorous (sp) at all. In Italy last year he survived on pizzas and bread and of course gelatto! Do you have any suggestions for food that he would like ie close to american fare.
Thanks

Actually, I'm not looking for american fare. We can eat that at home. So any unique English establishments would be appreciated.

Hi! We have eaten at both Le Gavroche and Gordon Ramsey on Hospital Road. Loved them both...the food was incredible at both restaurants. Both were expensive, yet well worth the cost for a grand dining experience. Try the multi-course menu as you get such a wonderful taste of the the best they have to offer on that evening! I would have to say I enjoyed the atmosphere at Le Gavroche better because it has a more traditional decor, whereas Gordan Ramsey was contemporary and more sparse. The service at both restaurants is top notch. We were invited into the kitchen at Gordan Ramsey and had an opportunity to see how it works from the inside!! Another wonderful place to dine is at The Conservatory at The Lanesborough Hotel. Probably my favorite of the three. The Dover sole and lettuce roles (an appetizer...can't remember exactly what they had in them, maybe crabmeat?)were unbelieveable! Also the atmosphere is very opulent and they have a piano and band playing quietly during dinner on the weekends. You can't go wrong with any of these. We loved them all!

thanks kmb
Actually, we're staying at the Lanesborough so I'll add that to my list

I have been to Gavaroche and Caprice also in that catagory, both lovely.

ripuanewone - I can't see exactly what has been said so far that makes you think travel_gal gives europeans a bad impression of Americans? Making an effort to not eat like at home is not stereotypical and what does it matter where she stays? Why would anybody really care?
Travel_gal - have agreat time on your trip. As for places to eat, ask around when you get there but avoid the jellied eels (don't ask.)

Travel_gal, my friend's uncle took me to "Rules"a very typical posh English restaurant. Very impressive.

The Conservatory at The Lansborough is one of my favorites! Its a beautiful room, the dover sole is outstanding, and I love the light crab rolls wrapped in lettuce. Since you are staying at the hotel, breakfasts in this same room is a must! On this trip we enjoyed Gordon Ramsey on Hospital Road, Nobu is right around the corner from the hotel,
so is Vong. Stop in to The Dorchester for cocktails-very nice! Have not been to the The Capital in a few years, but loved it! BTW-the concierge at The Lanesborugh got us in all the top spots!
Enjoy!

RE: ripuanewone

I think this guy's rash is flaring up again. travel_gal, disregard his silly comments and press on with a great trip. Don't be bothered by nasty little travel twits!

I enjoy the fish n chips when in London. My favourites are: Geals, at Nottinghill Gate and Seashell, on Lisson Grove. Cabbies will know both.

Enjoy London . . Rich
