London restaurant suggestions - formal evening for four women

Hello everyone!

My friends and I will be in London in mid-March. We had a silly idea to have a formal night for ourselves (no special occasion other than being in London together). This is the criteria for our search: someplace that will be around £40-45 per person for the meal/drinks, preferably a place that is quintessentially British/London, and someplace where we won't stick out like prom queens.

Now, given the nature of our evening out, we realize that we may not exactly fit in with the crowd in the first place, but we don't want to embarrass ourselves either. We realize there may be a fine line, but we want to keep it on the silly/fun side.

I've looked at toptable and found a few that I think might work:
Marcus Wareing at The Savoy Grill
Simpson's in the Strand
The Westbury Restaurant

Any advice on them or others would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hi J,

Absolutely, the Divan Room in Simpson's-in-the-Strand.

Sherlock Holmes and Watson used to dine there.

>and someplace where we won't stick out like prom queens. <

That's up to you.

Have a lovely evening out.

Definitely Simpsons in the Strand. Fabulous place w/ even better service.

The Grand Divan is perfect for what you want. But it will probably run a bit over your budget w/ wine. (Don't know for sure since the last two times I ate there I was treated - the last time I actually paid was about 6 or 7 years ago. But I think entrees are in the £20-£25 range so w/ everything you are looking at more than £45)

Thanks for the confirmations. I thought those three were the best out of what I could find.

Any others that might work too, please let me know. I'm open to suggestions. The price is a ballpark that we can give a little extra should we find something worthwhile.

Thanks again!

Welig12: Instead of tacking your question to a 15 month old thread (w/ info mainly about Simpson's) I would start a new thread w/ a title something like "Recent dining experience at the Savoy, London?"

I think the GRILL ROOM at the Cafe Royal on Regent Street is the place you'd want to go-beautiful decor in a Victorian setting, with gorgeous chandeliers and white tablecloths, surprisingly good food, with an emphasis on fresh seafood, but it is very reasonable, just about within your price range for meal and drinks. It's a great place, where the locals go, not tourists.

This is its official website, but not all of it is working, a lot of "events" are held in this place, because of the beautiful molding, sculptures, and frescoed ceiling-the interior is just gorgeous. Here's a review:

And here's a small picture of it I found on Yahoo:
