London Restaurant Suggestion

I am taking my mother to London for the weekend in November for her 65th birthday. It will just be the 2 of us(mother/daughter). Looking for some ideas on dinner suggestions. We have theatre tickets for Friday evening, so something in that area would be nice. Saturday evening is open. We're staying at The Goring Hotel.

Ideas/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.
Karen

In the theatre district (Leicester Square), I'd recommend Brown's for dinner after the show. If you're going on a weekend, it gets very busy with young business-types who stay in town after work, but that adds to the "London atmosphere" don't you think? We were there two weeks ago on a Friday night after a 5:00 show (Mama Mia). My husband had sole--thought it was wonderful--and I had a rocket salad with grilled goat cheese on toasted date bread. Absolutely wonderful!

I'm a little confused by your question. Are you looking for a pre or post theatre place for Friday night, a place for Saturday night, or both?

Brown's is fun. I like it, but don't expect to be able to talk there -- it is one of the loudest and noisiest restaurants I've ever been -- inside an old bank with echo causing walls.

Pre-theatre I'd suggest Rules -- London's oldest restaurant, refined and classy with traditional British food. It's a bit pricey, but they have a pre-theatre special that makes it far more reasonable. I'm betting a 65 year old mom would really love it.

Karen
Which theatre are you going to? Do you want the dinner for the night of your theatre show? or another night?

I love Rules. I think the prices are ok actually. They specialize in game, having their own hunting estate. It's very cozy and serves top-notch British food.
