We liked the Churchill Arms on Kensington Church St. It was our "local" when we stayed at a nearby B&B a couple of years ago. Excellent Thai food, inexpensive for London.

The Moon Under Water - Leister Square.

Have you tried doing a Search - as there have been some very extensive lists of Pubs and Pub Food on this Forum in the past.

Has it moved from Charing Cross Road? The Wetherspoon's there changed name from the Moon Under Water quite some time ago.

There are lots of Wetherspoons called the Moon Under Water. George Orwell would turn in his grave.

You can't go wrong with the Eagle on Farringdon Rd (which is the Eagle in the nursery rhyme "Pop Goes The Weasel").

Also have a look at the good pub guide which is widely available.

A strong second for the Good Pub Guide. There are actually two, one by that name (see http://www.goodguides.co.uk), and another, a bit more to my tastes, called the Good Beer Guide, put out by CAMRA, the Real Ale people (http://www.camra.org.uk/gbg).

My favorite pub in London is the Black Friar. I've never eaten their food, but the beer's good and the pub is an absolutely gorgeous Art Nouveau masterpiece. It is a cathedral of drink, no joke. Crowded immediately after work, not at other times. Non-smoking too.

I would definitely recommend anyone from overseas who wants to visit a traditional British pub to get the 'Good Pub Guide', or a similar publication. Otherwise you could easily end up somewhere absolutely dire.

For atmosphere/decor I recommend the 'Princess Louise' in Holborn, or one of the Hammersmith riverside pubs (The Dove, Old Ship etc). These aren't exactly central but are worth the trip.

The gents alone in the Princess Louise justify a visit!

The Moon Under Water gets it's name from an, imaginary, perfect pub in an essay by George Orwell.

Mind you those Etonians never buy their round.

Rumour has it they had other favourite stimulants, too

(local news joke, sorry).

They're notoriously tight with those too.
