London Poll

If you had a 1/2 day to stroll around London before meeting friends where would you go, eat, etc. We are flying in arriving 10AM into LGW on Sep 30 and staying in Victoria at the Comfort Inn Buckingham Palace Road. Friends arrive from Dublin on the 1st for the short weekend.

Westminster, Trafalgar Square & Buck House triangle - plenty of sights to see in that small area and you would be able to walk it all

Have a look at the map - www.tfl.gov.uk/assets/downloads/centlond.pdf

I'd go to the Victoria and Albert Museum and spend hours there at my leisure and then I'd go rest my weary feet on a double-decker bus around the city. And in between I'd find a pub that served good grub and real ale.

First I heard to Masters Super Fish near Waterloo tube station for fish and chips. This is a must. Then I take the bus out to Walthamstow to go to the William Morris Gallery, which I have never seen because it was closed the last time I visited London -- it was Christmas week. If not the William Morris Gallery, then the V&A, where I could spend hours. If there's time for dinner, I will go to Rules. I can never exhaust Rules's amazing menu in a lifetime of trips to London.

I'd take a stroll along the South Bank, London's seemingly most popular strolling venue

nice walkways along the Thames and you can see across the river many of London's landmarks and even hop on the London eye bigwheel if it strikes you

the South Bank is close to your hotel

you could walk down to the Tate Modern Museum on the South Bank in an old Power Plant then cross the fairly new bridge to St Paul's (the bridge that was supposed to bend but when it did it scared everyone so it's stabilized now - but a novel bridge)

To work up a good appetite I'd stroll over to Harrods and wander through the Food Halls.

After leaving without buying anything I'd find a nice pub nearby for lunch and a pint.

After lunch I'd walk to Green Park where I'd lay down and take a nap.

Then I'd visit the Cabinet War Rooms or take a sightseeing bus tour.

If the plane landing at 10am, you probably won't get to the hotel till close to noon.

If hungry, grab a quite bite (Quilon for Indian, Mango Tree for Thai) first. If not so hungry, maybe walk thru Green Park to get to Richoux for a light snack/tea.

If sunny, may do a quick hop-on hop-off bus, get off at Baker St, stroll through Regent's Park (don't miss the rose garden and St John's Lodge). Then continue walking either to Primrose Hill or along canal to Little Venice.

If rainy or not keen to take a long walk, or if you need serious workout on C/C, browse Mayfair through Burlington Arcade and Bond street (New and Old), stopping at Royal Academy of Arts). Or check if Clarence House (official residence of Charles and Camilla) is still open to public.
