London- Places to Stay

Ever been to London and/or England before? That makes a difference on how much time I'd suggest spending there.
London is almost twice as expensive as the countryside, but it's a lot of fun. If you've never been there before I'd suggest at least 4 nights in London and then a few nights in the countryside. I love the Yorkshire Dales, and the city of York is interesting.
There is certainly plenty to do in London for all 8 nights if you choose to stay there, especially if you love theatre.
As for where to stay, it depends on how much money you want to spend. The Dukes is wonderful but very expensive (250 Pounds or so). You can find places for 70 Pounds or less but they may be small, have a shower down the hall, or be in an out of the way location. Knowing your price range will help people suggest places.

Six of us were in London for six days, nearly killed ourselves trying to do everything we wanted to do, and didn't get all of it done. Our only day out of the city was a day trip to Windsor and Hampton Court Palace, which we really enjoyed. You won't have a problem finding things to do. Since there were so many of us, we rented a flat in Kensington.

My husband, 8-year-old daughter and I just got back from a 10-day trip (9 nites) to London. It was wonderful. We did not see half of what I had planned, so don't worry about finding things to do. I suggest side trips to Bath, Windsor, Hampton Court, Greenwich, Sratford-on-Avon, Brighton, if you are looking to get out of the city for a day or two.
We stayed in Knightsbridge at the Knightsbridge Hotel, which was wonderful. Unfortunately, I was told that they are closing in March for refurbishment, but you could try the Claverly Hotel (right next door). It's close to Harrods, three big museums, Hyde Park, and two Tube stops. Area is very up-beat and the streets are not mobbed.
Can't wait to go back.

It depends really on your budget whilst your're in London but I'd highly recommend "The Pelham" in South Kensington or "The Covent Garden Hotel". From 170-250GBP. You won't go far wrong with both of these if you want pure comfort and somewhere traditionally English.
If you only have 8 nights I'd skip going up to Yorkshire and head to STRATFORD UPON AVON, BATH, NEW HAMPSHIRE AND THE NEW FOREST OR EVEN OXFORD.

Carol:We have been to London several times and still have not seen everything.May is a great time to go.I would do 2 day trips outside London. Many great places can be reached by bus or train. The previous posts had many good suggestions,I would add Portsmouth and Cambridge. Also check out the Brompton Oratory in London for sung Latin mass on Sunday.Very beautiful even if not Catholic or religious.Enjoy.
