London Pantomime. BH
A feature of London now is the range of pantomimes across the southern and eastern suburbs. These are folk tales turned into knock-about comedy, with songs and audience participation. The actors encourage children in the audience to behave badly, shouting, laughing, and hissing the villain, so the best shows are the matinees, with plenty of children present. As the last curtain falls good triumphs over evil, and we go cheered out into the dark evening, the children skipping as they go. There are usually seats free, so a good plan is to choose a show, take a credit or debit card, phone the theatre, book a seat well back where you can see the audience and avoid flying bananas, and take advice on where to find lunch, perhaps with a beer, before the show. The strongest traditions are at the Lyric Hammersmith, Theatre Royal Stratford East, and Greenwich Theatre. Methodists with their hair down are something to see. Some theatres tend to bring in television actors and references, so are less clear to you from overseas: the Richmond Theatre, the Churchill Theatre Bromley, and the Ashcroft Theatre, Croydon. Moreover, I think the children there are better behaved in those parts, and less fun. Dear Mr Haines,
Many thanks for the list. So many choices! Last year, I enjoyed "Jack and Beanstalk" very much, it was great fun watching the show and audience. I wonder what to see this time? |
Ben, didn't you do this to us last year? Make me wish I could get to London during Christmas so I could see one of those hysterically funny pantomimes?
|
Yes, I did. I think that non-Britons who see a pantomime gain a new angle upon our staid and buttoned-up people.
Ben Haines |
oh no they don't.
|
Oh yes they do
|
Thanks (Patrick and Ben) for making me smile...
:D |
Come on boys and girls, I can't hear you.....
|
THANKS PATRICK AND BEN!!!!
:D :D :D |
Panto is a brilliant way to introduce young children to the live theater. I am not a particular traditionalist, but this is one that I am glad to see continue. It is no coincidence that the two most famous early 20th century comedians (Charlie Chaplin and Stan Laurel) were brought up on pantomime and music hall in the UK. We are taking our 7 year old daughter to see Lily Savage (Paul O'Grady) in Bristol. All silly and over-the-top stuff, but she'll love it.
By the way Ben and Patrick London.......They're behind you. |
I just hope you're not asked to explain *all* of Lil's jokes.....
