London or Italy

If you had a choice, would you go first to London or Italy? Why?

Linda May 10th, 2001 10:41 AM

Boy, that's a tough one, because I love both. Now, where in Italy? I think if I could spend time in the Naples or Florence area it would be Italy. Naples for the sure joy of living, Florence for the art and beautiful towns within a day trip away. But London!?! Think I would have to sleep on this decision first.

Italy. Hands down. There are things I like about London, but Italy is much more of an adventure, and the food and weather are so much better!

TIM IT HAS TO BE ITALY ROME IS MAGIC TRY A FEW SENTENCES IN ITALIAN THEY WILL LOVE YOU FOR IT AND REPLY IN FLUENT ENGLISH. MILAN FOR STYLE AND THE MILAN FOOTBALL DERBY (PASSION ACTION NOISE LIKE YOUVE NEVER HEARD.)TAKE MY ADVICE DONT WASTE YOUR LIRA BY GOING TO VENICE.ITS FILTHY OVERCROWDED AND HORRENDOUSLY EXPENSIVE

If I could ever only go to oneplace in my whole life it would have to be ROME. went one on a month long trip to Italy and never left Rome! London is the most dear city to my heart and I go often but if only 1 trip, it would be Rome!

Both are great places, with many merits. London is often recommended as an "easier" first trip to Europe, since you do not have to deal with the language barrier, and the cultural differences between the US and UK are not as great as those between the US and Italy (assuming you are a native English-speaker, from the US!)

That said, I still vote for Italy - if you are willing to do a bit of homework about how things work there, and learn a few phrases. It has a warmth and magic that will make you a travel convert! Also, your money will go much further in Italy than in London.

For most of the same reasons, Paris is also an excellent choice.

One or the other on a trip? ITALY! But the order of each on the same trip? London first and then Italy. I planned London at the end of a trip to Italy last summer. Even though I'd lived in London and remembered loving it, I hadn't been in many years. Compared to Italy though, London was a disappointment. I'm sure if I'd gong to London first I wouldn't have felt that way. Both are great places but so different.

I would definitely go to Italy. The food is great
and the sites are old and the museums are great.
London has no color and rains all the time. The people are friendly but the place and people are boring.

Agh, Tim, you devil, why make me choose??? The land of Shakespeare vs. the land of Dante?? The land of Burne-Jones vs. the land of Michaelangelo?? Friendly faces, charming countryside, enchanting museums in both! If you forced my arm behind my back & twisted it, I would probably scream "Italy", but I lived there longer, that's all, so I have more memories.
Hoping others have an easier choice,
Kathy
