Thanks so much for all the ideas in this post. I was particularly interested to see some of the places in the East End. We are heading to London for three months April-July and will be based in Bathnal Green. I've been to London innumerable times but I'm hoping to see lots of places I haven't explored yet. I'll be blogging about the whole thing and will try to do an ongoing trip report here on Fodors. I did the same thing from Paris a few years ago and it was fun.

Anyway in addition to buying far too many tickets to the National Theatre I'm hoping to see an number of the places mentioned in this post.

We've joined the Art Fund ( which offers free or discounted entry to many museums) and while my list is far too ambitious here are some of the places I'm hoping to see; Dulwich Picture Gallery, Denis Sever's House, Red Hill House, the Geffrye Museum, the Foundling Museum, Etham House, Kenwood House, Apsley House, Chiswick House, the Petrie Museum, Danson House, Strawberry House, the Estorick Collection, the National Maritime Museum, the Jewish Museum, the Museum of Childhood, the Horniman Museum and the Emery Walker House.

With three months, you should have plenty of time, but of course time has a habit of running away from you when you think there's a lot of it (if you see what I mean).

But you might also like to have a look at the Museum in Docklands and the Ragged School Museum for the local history, and Wilton's Music Hall for the atmosphere (if only for lunch or a drink). And keep an eye open for when (or rather, whether) there will a special opening of 19 Princelet St.

Time always runs away, particularly when you think there's enough. I'm sure I'll see only a fraction of the places on my list but I'm really looking forward to some of the places you've mentioned and that PalenQ has highlighted above. Funnily enough my neighbor mentioned the Ragged School to me the other day, and it isn't too far from where we will be staying!

Thanks for resurrecting this thread. Still working out my itinerary for this spring trip so this was all great info! I have been to several of the places mentioned that are off the beaten tourist track, so maybe I am not quite as much a newbie as I think of myself. I have been to London quite a few times and it is my favorite city, but I know that I have barely scratched the surface of things to do and see.

As Samuel Johnson famously wrote 'when a man get tired of London he gets tired of life'!
