London Night Life

Follow-up to my post on ideal places to stay for sights and nightlife:
Can anyone suggest some fun places for the nightlife for four 28 y.o. women - we are open to a variety of options - pubs/clubs/etc.

Any help is appreciated...
Darcy

Are you this vague when you buy shoes?

"I'd like some shoes suitable for a 28 y.o. woman" - heels/smart/casual/trainers/pumps/evening/daytime/winter/summer/etcetera.

Do you like smart places or casually informal?

Wow, thanks for the commentary.

Just looking for a list of options - we all like different things. If there is something legendary, or unique, or a 'must-do', then I would like to hear about it...

I figured being more specific would be too closed-minded.

When you get to London, purchase a Time Out from any newstand, grocery store, etc. There will be hundreds of listings of things to do -- pubs/clubs/etc. There are often discount coupons, too.

Have fun!

Options?

Mayfair Club, China White, Milk and Honey, The Rivoli bar at The Ritz, The American Bar at The Savoy, The Bar at Claridge's, Annabel's, Café de Paris, etcetera, I doubt you'll get into any of them, four 28yo women isn't the look these places go for, 28 is a girl.

If you want pubs, try any street corner and you'll find some.

Gee, and I thought since London nightlife was one of MK's areas of expertise he would have been more helpful. Guess not.

MK2 is being extremely helpful, if only the posters switched their ears on.

Heaven knows how many thousands of night places there are in London. Some are, for some people, worth crawling over smashed glass to get into. Those same places aren't worth a mention in Frommers to other people.

Ask a question as hopelessly waffly as this, and you deserve every "you'll just love the Original Cockney King and Queen Knees Up Special" answer you get.

No one can help this person, what music do they like - acid house/jazz/swing/naff pop/rock/r 'n' b/techno/disco/retro/soul etcetera? coupled with the style of venue they desire coupled with an area, anywhere could fit the bill for these girls.

I can't help somone who has no idea what they want themselves.

m_k2, why don't you lighten-up? Travel should be fun, but you are just so heavy. If you don't think that you can help, why don't you just move on to another thread?

Is it possible that flanneruk and m_k are the same ill-tempered person?

I second the suggestion to check TimeOut.

Have a wonderful time, ladies! To be young and fancy free in London has got to be one of the reasons God put us on earth. I can't help with suggestions, as my night life has been lacking this last decade or so, but I wish you a fabulous trip and lots of evening fun.

Don't mind m_k--it's a fussy old thing.

well on this occasion I do think I agree with MK and Flanner - I couldn't BEGIN to start suggesting places to go without knowing more.

Tell us more! What part of town will you be staying in? What music do you like? What ambience? What's your budget? How do you like to dress when you go out - jeans? The full heels and dresses?...and buy Time Out magazine.

Kate, you may agree with MK, but you were MUCH more polite in your response.

"You can take a fool around the world and they still come back a fool"

Sadly, too many people are proving this to be the case.

If you go shopping for a pair of shoes, does any shoe shop suit? People have to have some idea of what they want. If these girls wanted to buy a pair of jeans and I told them to go and buy Galliano gown, they'd be dismayed (even though a Galliano gown is infinitely more fabulous than jeans).

The same logic applies to nightlife, if you don't like smart then don't do it, but why should people (myself included) waste time making recommendations, and face the likelyhood of CruzKid88 turning round and saying that's not what it wanted? Even a budget constraint would've been helpful, perhaps they're just not aware London is longer than a smalltime, small town, street.

So here's the REAL question, MK: why do you bother to post lengthy replies to questions you deem ridiculous or in some other way beneath your notice? Obviously, NOTHING is beneath YOUR notice.

Didn't your mother teach you anything? If you don't have something nice to say, SHUT UP!

And as you can see, my poor mother failed miserably.

This is a very strange discussion. The OP asks a question which is, in my opinion, quite reasonable. Darcy just wants a variety of options for four 28 year old women to consider.

MK2 then responds that the question is too vague. Darcy, from whom we get a reasonable reply (and from whom we will be lucky ever to hear again), wants to present a group of people with different tastes a list of possibilities.

MK2 then responds with a very clear idea of places that would not be suitable. I see this as actual useful advice. It shows the question does give enough information to us to be helpful. However, MK2, who is not a 28 year old woman and who may not frequent night spots which are frequented by 28 year old women, is more familiar with places in which Darcy and her friends would probably not be comfortable. However, he continues to insist that he cannot be of any assistance.

Responding to the spirit and not the letter of MK2's post, a chorus steps in to chide him for not being helpful. Meanwhile, Darcy knows where not to go. I wish I had some idea of where to send her and her friends, and I hope she finds some good ideas in Time Out.

With luck this post will sound like the voice of reason that I mean it to be, and not like fuel to the flames.

Oh for goodness sake would someone reccommend something! Tell her what you liked doing over there. MK has his/her head up somewhere. Why bother telling them if you don't think they will get in to anabells etc, very petty. How droll.....

I haven't been in 2 years but Here is what I would try:

Covent Garden - losts of Pubs and Bars around the proximity. There is a Microbrewery called the Porter house that is good. There are 3 in Dublin and they recently opened in Covent Garden.

Soho I was brought out to by friends. Lots of fun bars and cafes for food and drinkies

Note places you see in the daytime and come back and night to check out.

Time out is the best place to see whats on etc and bring you off the tourist trail.

Also try this site as people give reviews of the places http://www.worldsbestbars.com/city/London/

Have fun!

Put your smart dresses on and go to the Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, go to the Bar on the top floor have a cocktail and watch the sun go down and the lights of London come on , move down to the night spot on the first floor no entrance charge smart bar small dance floor and live music, drinks expensive.
Late evening get a cab to Ronnie Scotts club in Soho, live Jazz downstairs disco or live group upstairs, fantastic venues smart people, it is what Londons night life is about.
