London Night Bus

We are departing the eurostar at 5:30 on a Wednesday morning. We have to be there at least 30 minutes before departure. Tube doesn't start until 5:30 and day buses start at 6:00. We will have to use the night bus but we are unsure of the best way to find one. Do they run out of Euston tube? If not does anyone know the closest place to catch one. Thanks in advance.

You can input the time you need to arrive at your station and your starting point. Click on the details of the particular routes that it finds to get bus numbers, etc.

Try the journey planner on www.tfl.gov.uk. If you use the night buses, allow plenty of time as they're not always very reliable. A taxi might be a better option from Euston to Waterloo.

Night buses are good for when you get stuck out late after the last tubes have run. But to get somewhere in a reasonable time at that time of the morning you would be much better off just hailing a cab. If you are on a main road there will be cabs out at that hour, if not have the hotel call one for you.

I did the journey planner but it has three changes and will take 38 minutes (if all the buses are on time) We could take a taxi but looking at the maps it doesn't look too far and now I'm thinking we might just walk. The planner gives a walking time of 20 minutes. Besides the cold and it being early in the morning I can't think of any other reason not to walk it. Unless of course it just seems like a shorter walk than it is on the map. Anyone have an opinion on whether we should walk or not? Thanks for your help.

I think you are misunderstanding the 20 min reference in the journey planner, which has to do with the maximum walk time for a valid connexion.

It's a bit over 2 miles from Euston station to Waterloo station. For a brisk walker, maybe 30 minutes; a more normal pace, maybe 40 or 45 min. Its an easy enough walk, straight down Southampton Row which becomes Kingsway, loop to the right on Aldwych, cross the Waterloo bridge.

Ron, you are correct. I was thinking it was 20 min walking. Well, we better stick to the bus or a cab. I understand if the hotel calls a cab the meter starts when they get the call. Is this true? Any idea how much a cab from Euston Station to Waterloo might cost? Thanks again.

The meter won't drop until you get in the cab - but if you are leaving from Euston, there will be cabs at the taxi stand. To even consider walking from Euston to Waterloo at 4AM, with luggage no less, is not realistic.

sherriow, since you have found the tfl site for the bus journey planner, if you look at the banner acros the top you will see <taxi-private hire>. Go there and you will get how they calculate taxi fares. A quick calculation for 2 miles (3.2 km) before 6 am looks to me like £7.

Thanks everyone for all your help. We are staying at the Thistle Euston and that is close enough to Euston Station to get a cab there. It is only a day trip to Paris, so no luggage to worry about and now no worries about transportation.
