London neighborhoods
 

My son, his wife and 6 year old daughter are travelling to London the end of May. They could use suggestions as to which neighborhood is best for them- good prices, safe, not too far from Central London (an easy underground ride)with many choices of restaurants. They will be there only 5 days and will see the major interests in the city and don't want to spend a lot of time going back and forth. I stayed last year in south Kensington which I loved, but that area may be too pricey for them.Thanks

There has been so much discussion regarding London "neighborhoods" just today, please search for them.

By the way, the British realllly dislike the American term neighborhood, which implies that London is a series of suburban American "neighborhoods. Say district or area.

Ignore alskar's comments about the use of the word "neighborhood". Although it's true that we don't use that term here, 99.9% of Brits won't be the slightest bit bothered if you choose to use it.

I liked the area around Victoria Station. Felt very safe at night and perhaps it wouldn't be as pricey as So. Ken. Metro is close as is the bus station should they want a day trip out.

I also stayed in So. Ken/Chelsea at the Nell Gwynne (Gwynn?) apts, Sloane Ave. (they have a website but I don't currently have it). It's a bit of a walk (15-20 min. to each of two different metro lines) but I thought the area was good and the price was reasonable. Lots of restaurants on Sloane Ave. & Kings Rd. However, this was in 1999 so don't know prices now. An apartment such as this might be a nice idea with a 6 year old. From the metro at Sloane Sq. you also pass the grocery store at Kings Rd. & Sloane Ave.
