london neighborhoods

I am not sure what neighborhood to stay in while in London. I want an area that does NOT shut down at night, that has restaurants, nice to walk through in the evening, but not too pricey...I have heard that Notting Hill is nice for that. Any advice?

How about Covent Garden? Lots of action there. Or Mayfair is a short distance away.

The West End/Soho area around the theaters is usually bustling at night but may be pricey. Many Fodorites like staying in the Bloomsbury/Russell Square area (near the British Museum)because it's reasonably priced, within walking distance of the theaters and has good transportation nearby. Since it's near the University, it's also got reasonably priced eating places.

I too, am looking for accomadations for london, for a June trip. Last time we were there, we stayed in a charming little(VERY LITTLE) flat in Kensington. It was very very nice, but a bit out of the way, altho, the tube stations are close to everything.
We were near the earl's court station. This time, I think I'll look in Knightsbridge area. anyone know of a nice hotel there?

I always stay in the Knightsbridge area==
We have stayed at the Beaufort Gardens and also the Claverly--

Both hotels are very small, rooms are smallish, and on a quiet cul de sace 1 block from Harrods and the Tube and right around the corner from Brompton Place- a street filled with Boutiques and neat little restaurants....

I LOVE the area-- you can cab it to the theater district to see plays and take the tube anywhere else in London--since you are so close the the tube station to begin with.....

Londontown.com is a popular website for "shopping" hotels. There are maps etc. The other thing you can do is a text search here for a certain area (ie type-knightsbridge AND hotels-in the text search).
