London Markets on a Sunday
 

This is our second trip to London and while our other 3 days are falling into place rather easily, Sunday isn't. I was considering Spitfields/Pettycoat/the Flower Market but now am including Greenwich Market in the list of possibles. Any input on which is a more upscale "better" market. We aren't buyers, just enjoy looking & strolling about -- really loved the Sunday Paris market. Would head toward the market after the Horseguards Ceremony, so that would make it @11am. Could take the Thames boat down to Greenwich from Westminster. We did take an evening dinner tour down to the Barrier on our last visit. Either market would be a sunny day plan. Greenwich is has the more upscale arts and crafts stuff and as well as lots of fun and funky shops to poke around in. It's definitely better to go on a fairer day but as you know, you don't always have that option in London.<BR><BR>Spitalfields is doable in the rain because it's a covered market. There's a bit of everything there (arts &amp; crafts, organic food, collectibles) Petticoat and Brick Lanes are clothing, bric a brac and a great street show.<BR><BR>Spitalfields et al are closer to central London. We usually follow it up with dim sum in Chinatown or curry from Brick Lane. Greenwich is more of a trip and we tend to spend most of the day there but your plan sounds workable too.<BR><BR>Have a great time!

Greenwich is a lot smaller as a market, but it is surrounded by a lot of interesting shops, the Maritime Museum, the Observatory and a great park to walk in if it's fine enough with views over London from the Observatory. The market itself is covered, and tends to the artier/quirkier/pricier end of crafts, clothes and food. There are bric-a-brac and clothes markets a few minutes walk away.<BR><BR>Spitalfields is much bigger and also covered. It has much of the same sort of stuff as Greenwich, but also bric-a-brac, lots of clothes, as well as the other markets nearby. It's a bit of a walk between there and the Columbia Road flower market, which can get very crowded. The environment here is urban and buzzy.

We were in London in early December and Spitafields was closed. Does anyone know if it has reopened?

Spitalfields market was open when we were there in January on the last Sunday.

Part of the old market building is being redeveloped, but (after much protest and debate) part is being kept available for the market.
